  1. So it took forever, but the pics finally uploaded... This is the canopy before anything was done to it--it's about six inches high and, you've all seen the pics, I'm not the tallest person ever. So adding the height of the stand&tank and the canopy, and taking into consideration what I lack in height, something had to be done! So what we decided was to alter the canopy so that it could be opened from the panel in the front instead of having a lid on top that lifted up (...the height issue...I'm short ) These are some of the corners used to reinforce the canopy--it kept twisting--and the hinges to be used on the back Random shot of what the back of the canopy looked like before it's remodeling One of the corners after being reinforced with......a corner.....(haha) The canopy being clamped to new lengths of wood so it could be drilled Almost finished with most of the supports in place so that it wouldn't twist anymore when i lifted it The finished product, with all the hinges and supports and such in place The finished product (sitting atop a 75g tank that isn't mine) shown in operation--it opens smoothly and will be a biiiiig help--I'll be able to reach the bottom of my tank now!!!!! (Thank you Jason )
  2. Thanks everybody for the replies--that was really fast. I think I have the fan/heat issue under control for the moment, even though I'm sure it'll come up again. Right now what I really need to find is more sand for my tank. I have some but it's not enough to get started, so does anyone have any sand they'd be willing to sell me/know of where I can get good somewhat decently priced sand? I also have a pic update on my canopy--it's finished ... ... (okay so the update will be as soon as I finished uploading the pics....it's taking longer than I thought.... )
  3. Sorry for the lack of updates everyone, it's been a painstakingly slow process getting everything set up and so far I have yet to do much else with my tank since my last update. But I was wondering if anyone knows where I can get good (but cheap--high school student budget) fans? The heat issue......so frustrating. Anyway, specifically I'm looking for....120 mm fans? Or whatever would work just as well would be great, and I was wondering if anyone knows of something like a wiring diagram to wire the fans to an old(ish) computer power supply? This is would be really great no matter what fans I'm going to use--I reeeeaaally would rather not get electrocuted trying to guess.....haha (new pic update coming soon)
  4. Well I've got some pretty good news I think. My tank with three power heads and a Penguin filter running for 3 days now has stayed between 76.2 and 80.03... I'm excited.
  5. Pic Update!: (i scared him with my camera ) Sooo I think this little device should make things a lot easier than just two little electrical sockets in the wall....
  6. Could anyone here shed some light on this, personal or other wise or have a link to some articles?: We're trying to decide on a closed loop vs power heads on a 75 gallon tank. Heat is a very big concern, considering it gets pretty close to a sauna in here during the day... I did some searching around online and found that a single external pump in the range of about 1200 gph usually draws 130-ish watts for an economically priced pump, where the same flow could be accomplished with power heads drawing roughly 80-ish watts....so I guess what I want to know is which one will add less heat to the water? Help would be verrrry much appreciated
  7. I was supposed to get sand tonight for my tank but it didn't happen...
  8. Ok, screw proper cycling, I've added my first fish already!! : deeeeefinitely kidding. haha . (ok enough kidding around on my part--my next update will be a serious one, not a joke...haha)
  9. hmm maybe i should bring this up with jason then...........haha
  10. ....this is hilarious... I wonder.....is it possible to change my BB name? Apparently everyone's convinced I'm a mermaid....... x100
  11. Tall tank = death But thats because I'm short.
  12. oops, I forgot a pic yesterday.....haha, this is the whole reason Jason looks like he was working so hard in the last pics I posted: heehee, just kidding, he really was working hard, I owe him
  13. YES he deserves credit-he's the one who introduced me to this whole hobby! That's jason by the way.... jason....the filter freak.....
  14. I'm finally getting my first tank started
  15. I just got a 75 g tank, and I haven't started setting anything up yet but I'm worried about the heat in my house--it gets really warm in here sometimes. I want run a closed-loop system instead of having powerheads, and I was wondering if its going to make a huge difference in terms of heat if I submerge the pump or if I run it externally?
  16. you're awesome ps) i'm in the first pic, can anyone find me?
  17. That's one of the sites I checked out, I kinda thought it was a little crazy--plus it was the ONLY place that said anything near that small of a tank.
  18. Well for 6" a 90 sounds about right, but what I was thinking was since they start out at about 2" I could get one, let it grow until I couldn't keep it in my 54 and then trade it out for another small one. Good idea? Bad idea?
  19. So mostly why I'm soooo excited to start my tank is because I'd really REALLY like to put a hippo tang in it. I've done some reading/researching, as well as asking around, and it seems that almost everywhere I look, I always find a different answer, but I ran into a few that all say the minimum size tank I can put a hippo tang in is about 40g, and a few sources that all say something in the 70+g range....?? The tank I'm planning on starting is probably going to be about 54g, so because of the differences in all the answers I'm getting, I'm not sure if I can put a hippo tang in it. I'd reeeeally appreciate it if anyone has any answers that make sense. Thanks
  20. haha, sorry I meant what is his board name
  21. I'm still in school, will that allow me to do a student membership? How do I "PM howard." Thanks
  22. Apparently I can't see all the board sections like the sales one so I was just wondering why this is and /or when I will be able to see those? Thanks :]
