  1. I have sort of a mesh of everything: 2xEheim 2217's with spray returns 4xMJ1200's w/ a redsea wavemaster 2xreturn pvc with from my sump pump (sen 900) but I really really like the MJ's with the wavemaster. It has several modes, and I keep mine on the mode that rotates between the three other modes every 4 hours. My only complaint is that the MJ magnet adapters are like $20 each and those suction cups they come with kinda suck, but otherwise, its low cost, easy, and effective. Esp if you find one on WAMAS. I was able to pick mine up with 4 or so frags from a member here real cheap.
  2. Id be in for the sump if its drilled and partitioned... any pics of that? anyone seen it? Probably some LR too if I was gonna go in.
  3. When my overflow pipe was clogged with green algae, I just tied a ball of paper towel to a string and pushed it down with a coat hanger... that seems safer than draino- even if it is a drain.
  4. My CB ate all the feather dusters off my rocks and the big one I had in the sand, but it has stayed away from my SPS (only two though, not a tank full of it). For the loss of those things... its awesome to not have aptaisia, bristle worms, or those clear sand worms! They're beautiful too!
  5. Yep something like that. I got mine during a group buy... have been using it since. Its awesome and was cheap. Cant ask for more!
  6. I'm planning on ordering one this week... so tagging along. I think they munch on SPS if they're hungry... so from what I've heard, just make sure they're fed!
  7. I had a jumper as well (a red one), so now I have the crate on top. Also, mine hides fairly regularly in a 55 with a clown and a tang, but used to swim about. Perhaps they are moody...
  8. Fingers? Try Hand! I bought some LR from Carla a while back, and her tanks are downright awesome. That is the largest clam I've ever seen... at least 12'' maybe 15? HUGE.
  9. prolly grew over it? I have a bunch of zoas on a tonga rock, and there were a few aptaisas, but now they're mysteriously gone as well.
  10. What and where is wallys? Thanks!
  11. Are firefish that aggressive? Mine lives with a BH tang and a clown and he hides all the time, and generally keeps to himself.
  12. No crap. I bet it looks like that under blue light, but what about regular light... a mishmash of brown? $600 is a ton considering you could get buckets full of corals here or online for that... whew!
  13. Could you snap a photo of that? I've got a standard overflow with u-tube that drains through the bottom into the sump, and I'd love to get rid of that slurp and extra bubbles. I thought I just had to deal with it! Thanks
  14. Hey, I notice you have two U-Tubes in your overflow. Does one act as a backup, or does that just drain more water? thanks. d

    Sump

Actually, I get microbubbles carried over from my overflow drain. I've put a sponge in between the drain outlet and the first baffle, which reduces it a little, but I still have a pretty wretched problem. Any advice for the drain? It lets water out under the water level as well as air. Could I put a T joint on there and have one pipe going up to let the air out and one going into the sump? Do other people have this problem? Thanks!

Well I redid the tubing with PVC and am waiting a few more hours for the curing to be done. After its all set up and running I'll post some pics. I really like how it turned out, and doing PVC work wasnt that bad at all. I had never cut any pipe before. d

    Sump

Haha! We are on the same page. I thought about that today at lunch. I'm excited to see if I need to do anything, but Im with you on the teeth idea for sure. I def dont mean to hijack here, but in the other part are you saying the pump level will be lower than the global level of the sump? thanks! d

    Sump

Lets see, the total cost was: $20 for the tank, on dollar per gallon day at petco and I spent about 60 bucks on materials for the sump, but I dont remember their individual cost. I got: 4ft of 1.25 tubing for the overflow, 15ft of 3/4 tubing for the pump, a giant acrylic sheet for the baffles and lid, silicon from petco, some hose clamps, and a cutter... I think thats about it. I bought the actual overflows and pump from Jason, so that was a great deal, all in all WAY under what you would have to pay for a new one, plus it was fun to build. So far as the power going out, you guys are probably right, I've only got about 2in from the top o the baffle to the rim, so I might have to cut out a few inches from the top and re silicon. :( But hey thats what fish guys do right? I guess it all depends on where I place the overflow teeth, and if they can supply enough water. It should be 100% dry by friday night, so thats when I'll give it a test. Cross your fingers! d Thanks chip. I was planning on putting the returns very high, to agitate the surface since I love the shimmer it gives the metal halides. I was also toying with the idea of a check valve, so if the power did go out, I would only have to worry about the overflow leveling off and thats it. All that being said, I did actually forget to calculate what that would be when I got home from home depot and just started working Hopefully it will be OK!

    Sump

Here you guys go! Without the overflows and pump, I think I spent a grand total of $60 bucks including the tank. My first sump too, so I'm pretty happy with it. The silicone (bought at petco) says it needs about 48 hours to dry 100% so Friday night, I'll pluger in and see if she runs. Jason- that overflow and pump should look a little familiar http://www.ddoud.com/digi2001.jpg http://www.ddoud.com/digi2002.jpg http://www.ddoud.com/digi2003.jpg http://www.ddoud.com/digi2004.jpg

    12g Aquapod

I just propped it over the feeding hole in the top of the hood. I lost some aesthetics but it was worth it for the temps. I had it on the light timer circuit so it would only get that cold when the lights were on. I bought a used 5.5 or 12v adapter (I forget) and just ghetto rigged it to an old computer fan, and secured it to the lid of the AP. Theres more than enough room to blow the air out the two tiny vents on the side of the lid, and out the back. Salt creep increased out the back though, but no big deal for me. I also had a clown go missing for a week (yes!) and found that he had swam through the grilles down and up all the chambers and ended up in the back near the power head. He was a lucky guy. Still with me today! When I put up the acrylic flow restrictor, I also put a acrylic lip over the top of the tank back wall to decrease the area between the teeth and flow restrictor (worked for me with no more mods), and also prevented my lightfoot crab from crawling over the top and into the chambers (which happened twice, and their even harder to nab out). I tried some mesh, but it ended up getting clogged to quick. Hope this helps! d

    12g Aquapod

Hey I just read this, but I have an AP12 that has the same temperature problem (stock lights, though). All I do is blow air from an 80mm computer fan across the top of the water and that gets it down to 73-70 without a problem. Cheap and great! d EDIT: Also, I had 2x~12w CF lights on the back of my AP and had cheato in the fuge. I left the lights on all the time and just sort of forgot about it until my flow slowed down out of the pump. I pulled out MOUNTAINS of cheato. That stuff was so dense it was INSANE. I've got enough (fluffed out) to fill my 20g sump now. Anyway, I would def get some lighting on the back of that thang. my bulbs were "grow"bulbs from home depot, but there is probably better stuff online a few more $$s. Second to nano-reef.com too, that place is killer for tiny tanks. On mine I added a peace of acrylic so that only the skimmer portion of the tank drained water. I did this post cycle so I used magnets to hold it in place. I also put a smaller piece of acrylic over the bottom of the teeth so I could control the water flow in. It was a great way to keep the surface clean, and maintain the water level in the tank and in the back. I just converted mine into a 55+20sump so the glory days are over, but wow was it fun. Let me know if you have ??s
