Is anyone here a marine biologist, or in a similar field? I'm curious if there are any programs locally (in the DC area) or the names of the best programs in CA area, if there are any. My work allows me to study part time, and I'm just about finished with my work-related degree. I thought I might branch out and learn more about the science of reef environments! Also, are there any books you would recommend? Thanks! -d

I cant wait. This made the nytimes too... What impact might it have on the national aquarium?

I went the melanarus wrasse way about this, and while I still see some, their numbers severely diminished. Eventually, I'll probably do an interceptor treatment, but idnk, none of my corals are giant colonies, and if the wrasse can keep them at bay, then maybe thats OK too. Most of this stems from my total laziness and not wanting to remove my snails, shrimp and crabs...

I don't think it's really 120 degrees in my tank...

So then do you check that both temps are within a certain range? I'd love to see your program code, if possible. I've been trying to figure out how to say if temp < 80 and time = light time then turn on! Thanks! -
Thanks. I see em but I'm a little confused as to why we need more chloramine filter power when the reefkeeper III says it takes care of things... can someone help me out? am I missing something? This is what i've got and it says it takes care of chloramines ... http://www.airwaterice.com/product/1TYPHOO...or_100_GPD.html Can someone help me out here?

I'm not sure I understand. My RK3 from AWI has two carbon columns already. Are you advocating a third/fourth? Is there enough in the water to saturate the existing columns? What sort of water volume are you creating to use your carbon up in 6mo? I'm just curious, because I was replacing with a Tpack from AWI on about an 8mo basis. Also, which AWI product are you advocating, because I cant seem to find an additional carbon column for sale there. Thanks

Interesting Brian Thanks. I'll try the everything but vodka for a while and see if that takes care of it. I do have some flow issues... but nothing I thought was too serious... perhaps it is! Thanks

I was reading on another thread about how to combat GHA and I've been following the directions: I run 1cup of phosphate remover every two weeks along with a cup of carbon in two separate canister filters, I have a UV (whose bulb may be old), I siphon as much GHA out as I can at a time with bi-weekly 5g water changes (70g total volume), I replaced my 150W MH and 130W CF lights recently, and I am running new RODI filters from AWI. I have to admit, its getting better, but still... it grows! Strangely, the GHA grows out of the way in the top rear corners of the tank, and the red (slime?) algae (which looks like a carpet on the sand and rocks its on) grows more or less under the direct MH light. What else can be done to combat this? The brand of my sterilizer evades me at the moment, but do UV bulbs have to be replaced annually too? Or are they good until they burn out so to speak? I'd say its about time I replace my floss in the canister filters, but I've heard that only leads to nitrates if left unkept and I dont have a problem with those (less my test kit lie to me) but, I'll change those out tonight anyway when I'm adding new carbon and phosphate remover. As far as I know (weekly high's and lows): PH from 7.9-8.2 according to ACIII CA ~380-420 (saliferts) MG ~1250-1280 ALK ~7-9 (this is a tough one for me to keep high, so this week I dosed to 10 and I'll see where it is at the end of the week- hopefully 8) the nitrates and nitrites should be zero, but I'm not using salifert tests for those. What else can I do?! Thanks!

Arlington, Co. Here... anyone know? Edit: answered my own q: http://www.arlingtonva.us/departments/envi...esClmnfaqs.aspx
-
You're in great falls? Thats turrible... I hope your generator gets you through! At least its not out everywhere, so you can get more if you need to. No power loss in Arlington so far as my roommates can say.... Has anyone else lost power?
-
Man that is a great tank. I'd eventually like to get either a 90 or a 120 like that. I notice on the bigger tanks folks put that pink foam stuff under them... It looks like you did that too... how come? Thanks!
-
looking at this, it appears we're spared (us NOVA folks at least) http://www.wunderground.com/wundermap/?lat...p;ft=0&sl=0

My roomies monitoring the tank still have power! My backup is if the power goes out I'm gonna drive home (from harrisburg) and power an airstone with my car battery Yes, I need a generator.
-
Thats gonna be tougher than the storm!
-
Is anyone in the DC area preparing for the tropical storm thats supposed to hit tomorrow? I'll be in Harrisburg, PA, away from my tank unfortunately. d

Every other day? I've got some hair algae and I've been doing a cup every two weeks... does phosphate remover not work like carbon?
-
This is interesting. I just bought a yellow watchman and not a month later I'm having red algae outbreaks... I have changed a few other variables (lights, rodi filters) but I hadn't thought about this! Thanks

Yeah! I just got one from amazon... 850w@~8amps with the lights on! Hoooyeah! -
That thar feller is HUGE. I wonder what the monthly cost would be in goods alone... my 55 runs about $37. Annual Salt/lights/RODI stuff/BRK chemicals.... not to mention power consumption.

Man I just spent about 30 mins looking for this tank. Its a beaut. Any updates?

I love the design of the vortech's... I only wish they werent $300 plus. I guess I feel that way about all the power heads in this hobby- minus the maxijets - but like you say, the maxijets are the ugliest. Is the powerhead silent? It would be an interesting DIY project for sure... but thats off topic... love the look! d -
That would be nice. Have you followed up? The store in mechanicsburg, pa as well as the new one in sterling, va are only doing actual $1/g for the 20g and 29g's and the 55's are $80 this time around. Kinda sucks. The 75 they had there was on sale, but not $75... like low 1-teens.
-
Oh man, 1000 hermits... can you snap a photo when you put those in!? I just ordered 10... lol. These tanks are amazing.

http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/science/08/14...s.ap/index.html A pretty interesting article. It makes me wonder what the algae is doing in my tank to the O2 supply.
