  1. That's not a very fair comment chip. When you started the thread, you mention the price with shipping! which IMPLIES a mail order. Now, Glenn specifically mentioned 2 local shops on top of that and giving business to them if they can work with us! AND- hey, we are all just looking out for each others wallets when trying to save a couple bucks. It is only a couple bucks after all- nothing in the big picture,
  2. I think I got it last time from Champion Lighting. Normal price is $15.95/ 8lbs. Don't know how much shipping was, but don't think it was $6. Maybe though.... Michael
  3. Howard, I have one of the hellolights ballasts running as well. No complaints at all.
  4. a single chamber is fine- a second can always be added. as far as pumps- most come with the pump that the reactor itself uses. There needs to be some way of getting water to the reactor though- it can be from a T off a return line, a dedicated powerhead, one of those new lifter pumps, etc. Lots of ways to accomplish this part. I have a Korralin reactor that I picked up from algaeman- I love the design of it as it uses a real small footprint. Most of the acrylic guys like geo, precision marine, etc all use the same design, and these seem to need some space but never heard any real complaints about them. I picked up a regulator, with needle valve, solenoid, and bubble counter from Aquacave.com for $80. Made by Milwaukee. Premium Aquatics and probably Marinedepot have some packages for everything. For the tank, you can either get that from Robert's oxygen if you plan to use them for CO2 refills, or buy your own tank, which will come empty. The second tower is really a way to try to make sure that the co2 is all used up. In many of the designs this is just a passive flow through. I remember Paul used to just run the effluent of the reactor over an open air container of extra media. I have made them in the past with old tap water purifier containers.
  5. Man that is a bit old. Was the tank as I first had it when I moved up here. It sure has changed a lot since then.
  6. would this be cheaper than buying the 50lb bags?
  7. Bill has it right on.... hand and/or feet warmers is what you want to ask for. This is the season for them, so they shouldn't be too hard to find. Getting someone on the phone who has an idea what you are talking about- that's another story altogether.
  8. Reefs.org's Nano Reef Buildoff is now underway! The Nano Reef Buildoff is a contest of ingenuity and design as well as the overall husbandry of captive microcosms. Most importantly, it is a collective learning experience for hobbyists everywhere. Learn from other reefkeepers' successes and failures. Share, derive, and discuss ideas about unique approaches to system designs and methodologies. Be creative and have fun! Reefs.org thanks our many members for brainstorming this creative and constructive contest. 9. As there are more than a few new people, some other things I thought I would mention. First, do not mix frags in the same bag of water. Bag each type seperately. Preferably 1 bag of each coral for each trade. Use plenty of water, but some room for air in the bag. The biggest concern on a short bagging day like this is temperature dropping too much. Don't overdo it though- people need to pack them up to get them home. Second, if you need some guidelines with fragging or mounting, we can start another thread and talk about it. As has been alluded to, getting some of them secured can be a bit of a challenge. If you get a coral you are unsure about- ask. Placement, flow, lighting it came from, how to best mount, etc. No one mentioned plumber's epoxy for mounting corals, but for decent sized stoney pieces, this is what I prefer to use. In the next couple days I will pin up some basics on mounting. For people receiving frags, I can recommend nothing more strongly than helping them survive than to get them secured when you get home. For those interested, I would suggest a small aquarium notebook (or computer file) with which you write down the type of coral you are getting and who you got it from. Keeping track of some of these is a good part of the fun a year or so from now after they have grown in and you are cutting them off to share. I believe the club still has a couple copies of calfo's "book of coral propagation" for sale. If there is a big demand, let me know immediately, and I will see if our speaker can pic up some from Anthony before he heads over here on Friday.
  10. this is a new school for us, so I don't know what the layout is like. I think we have an auditorium, so most of these sorts of activities, including where DR mac will be, will probably be out in the hallway??? if so lets have everyone meet before the talks start, and then during the break. in the general area of where ever DR mac is located (which is usually swamped with people looking through his boxes of treasures. Again, folks, please try to get some hand warmers to keep your corals warm. and double bag corals- too many times I have seen a bag that leaked water. Try to get the trading done ahead of time- and not at the end- You don't want to miss the raffle.
  11. I am probably one of the few folks here who has ever bothered re-generating the resins. I do not bother doing it anymore. The $ saved just isn't worth the trouble. Even having lab facilities to do it in, I found it to be way way way to much of a pain- topped on the smell and nasty chemicals, I really do not think it is worth it. I had to seperate the ani from the cati though as it came from a mixed bed, which adds to the inconvience factor. I now just buy the media and refill the di portion of my filter. I have been using buckeye supply for the resin. I can probably find the instructions somewhere if your heart is set on regenerating them. fwiw, Michael

  13. Oh Yeah, to answer your Question about joining Michele, you can join at the door or pay $6 for the meeting. In addition to full access to the website that membership offers, most of the "group buys" are done in the members only area, and some local stores offer a discount. Seriously- I think the vast majority of the membership feels that their dues are well spent. We only do formal meetings quarterly, but we really try to bring in the best speakers around.
  14. I will bring what is in that corner of the tank. There will be plent of loose zoanthids as well, Might be 3 rocks. Also, I will have some xenia that has started shading my anenome tank. Nice healthy stalks. Michele, I will welcome you to the club with great coral to test that tank with, maybe a couple. I don't know what I'd do without these meetings some times to cut back the corals. Michael
  15. I'm unable to upload an avatar tried from 2 browsers. file is a 24kb jpg
  16. I want to pull to rocks covered with pink centered zoanthids and blue sponge from my tank. Anyone interested in them? $10 each or trade for decent sized pieces of live rock. Michael
  17. I recently replaced my CO2 regulator- will be in next week. Anyhow, I have a solenoid for sale that is brand new. The regulator I picked up at www.aquacave.com They have a milwaukee regulator with the buble counter, solenoid, and needle valve for $70. Also have a package with a controller, but not really cheaper than buying both seperately.
  18. Steve, those ones you pointed out are much cheaper! Anyone know what the difference in them is that makes the more expensive one a better choice?
  19. On a seperate note- how much juice and these safely run? Would you run this through a surge protector or directly to the wall? One prob I am having is with all the AC/DC adapters- I take it they won't fit in the back?
  20. OK looks like a bunch of wamasers are about to whip up some collective bargaining again! Man I love seeing this happen. Anyhow, I would definately be interested in one- if we can pool it up for pickup at the meeting. Second- GET them to GIVE us one for the raffle! One of the "official" representatives would be happy to contact them if they want assurance we are on the legit. Can reference our website, meeting homepage info, and this thread.
  21. Been meaning to get it, but never have. Might try here- http://www.kgs.ku.edu/Hexacoral/Biodata/ or here http://whelk.aims.gov.au/coralsearch/coralsearch.php
  22. Wait to hear from eddi on that. I think this is the company that he has been having problems with the ballasts blowing fuses or something.
  23. us plastics might be one source. if not the "starboard" brand, they carry some stuff real close
  24. If anyone is in need of small styrofoam coolers, drop me a line. I can rescue some. The get lots of them in at the lab- some are recycled, but unfortunately many are not (done on the supplier end). These are smaller ones and perfect for a small amount of coral. I can also salvage ice packs if anyone wants some of those (can also be warmed and used as warm packs). Will have to get this stuff at the meeting though. Michael
  25. There is a petco in the plaza right next to congressional- I can hit that, and a petsmart close by (that doesn't do salt fish, but hopefully will let me hang the flyer). I will also stick some up at grocery stores, etc....
