  1. yea i have a coralife now that i just washed out yesterday because it stopped working but i will hopefully be able to upgrade my system with a sump and a better skimmer. most likely an asm g4plus or if someone is selling a better skimmer on here for 400 or so i will consider that an option. depends on how good santa is to me this year
  2. How old is you your tank? Running a sump? What is your flow like? How much are you feeding when you do? I don't even run as skimmer on my tank... how high are your trates? You don't seem like you have really sensitive stuff there and with 200 lbs of stuff just how big is this tank? no sump tank is 3 months old i have 3 seio 1100's and a mj1200 and a mag 7 that feeds my chiller 125 gal tank 6ft about 20 ppm i feed about a quarter sheet of nori every other day and about 20 or so pellets and a cube of mysis or bloodworms mixed with a sq inch of formula one. ill either feed the pellets or the frozen but not both in one day but i replace the nori when its gone
  3. another rookie with high nitrates what a surprise. i am trying to figure out why i got it all of a sudden. my skimmer wasnt skimming consistently for the past few days. also i just cleaned off some various algal growths from my front and back glass. i feed my tank every other day or two. i feed frozen formula one and mysis shrimp and bloodworms. also pellets and nori sheets. i have a yellow tang a coral beauty angel and 2 yellowtail damsels. i have some snails for algae and detritus. i have a green millepora bali slimer (ithink thats it) xenia green star polyps a kenya tree and one other i cant remember what it is. i have 240lbs of live rock and 200 or so lbs of live sand. i have a coralife superskimmer 220 for a short time. thats it for filtration until i get a bulb replacement for my uv. if i forgot something im sorry but i wanted all the info available for a more accurate answer. oh yea i did a water change of 10 gallons a week ago and i change it every two weeks
  4. thats terrible! i am sorry for your losses. these horror stories are convincing me to invest in a controller and some other things when funds allow because you save a few hundred and it can easily cos several hundred when a tank crashes.
  5. about how much should i expect to pay at brk since i was goin to go down there anyway if there prices are close to online i will just get it there. i prefer to buy livestock in person
  6. just fillin that thing would cost a fortune but it is a beautiful dream.
  7. yea it will be a little while before i do it but when i do it will be documented thoroughly. i am excited about it and am thinking of what to keep already and i just started a 125 gal in september
  8. weight clarity and flexibility made me decide to go with acrylic rather that glass particularly when considering the volume of this thing. after a conversation with NAGA i am looking at 10x4x2' as a "container"
  9. well after talking to a guy on another forum with a substantial amount of experience in the hobby as well as with acrylic i have decided to consider it as an option as well. also dandy i am looking at a volume between 450 and 600 gal as this will be my ultimate reef. i am trying to keep the height down as much as i can and give my planned sohal and other space needy fish plenty of room.
  10. if anyone on the forum knows how and can build a glass aquarium i would like to speak to them about it. i have a few basic ideas and would like to discuss them with someone who know what is and isnt possible. thanx
  11. you can run a tank with no skimmer but it will be substantially more difficult. you will have to do more water changes more often. especially if you plan to add sps corals which require a lower nutrient content. having a skimmer isnt mandatory but it makes running the tank alot easier and i would recommend that you at least get a cheap skimmer rather than running nothing. also you have to consider your fish load. if you have a a tang or more. things like that will make it even more difficult. hope this helps
  12. i have read different things about this shrimp some of it good some not. i have 2 yellowtail damsels a yellow tang a coral beauty angel and three peppermint shrimp. i hear they are agressive toward damsels wrasses and other shrimp and possibly corals and anemones. what are folks experience about this?
  13. thanx anyway my friend. a good guy on here is gonna let me use his drill but i still dont know how to do it so i guess i will have to wait.
  14. then i guess the next issue is since i suck with my hands and would not trust myself to do it. is anyone out there that would be willing to help me when i decide to make that happen. also how much is the hole saw in case i decide to try anyway
  15. i have two small damsels a coral beauty angel some snails and a green brittle star. is that too much? if i have it drained will i go through another full cycle? would i have to take everything out inclucing sand or can they just drill above the line. i dont know how the drilling thing works so these maybe obvious questions
  16. can someone explain how that works please?
  17. more than unnecessary if you run it continuously it will turn into a nitrate factory. i have a fluval 404 that i rarely run unless i am doin something very specific. bottom line is the only mechanical filtration u need in your tank is the skimmer
  18. i am somewhat confused. i jus set up my first tank 2 months ago. it is a 125 gal. with a hang on back fuge. the bottom panel is tempered but the other panels can be drilled. i dont know much about overflows but i was wondering if there is a way to get around the tank not being drilled? or if a vendor or experienced member could give me a basic estimate on how much it would cost to facilitate the drilling.
  19. man where were you guys last week especially since i jus went to aquarium one and didnt know that he said that o well i still need it done
  20. i finally made it to aquarium one and i was very pleased with my experience. thanx to cbashaw i got what i needed and will be going back
  21. i didn't like the store. the customer service was non existent and the selection was somewhat underwhelming. perhaps they will improve on these things. until then its not worth the trip
  22. i need to get these two tests done and i wanted to know iif anyone knows of a lfs that will do it?
  23. yea i have been to wally's but it was a while ago but it was pretty unimpressive when did this new guy take over?
  24. the columbia mall post reminds me of an idea i had. living in the dc area i have been to many stores but i have only found one that i feel comfortable with. can people give me some general recommendations on stores in terms of care for livestock service and pricing. thank you
