Tom C. August 30, 2006 August 30, 2006 I had a pair before. I would see goby but never the shrimp. If you do some rock rearranging you will find them. What kind of tank and rock do you have? I got the pair last week and ever since they been hiding. squiddly August 30, 2006 August 30, 2006 My two hid for a long time as well, coming out only at night, which is when I fed them.
rocko918 August 30, 2006 August 30, 2006 I would just continue to feed the tank, they will get the food that falls into their lair. They are going to hide until they feel comfortable. You can't force them to come out.
altezza August 30, 2006 Author August 30, 2006 I have a 25gal with around 35# of LR. Well i hope they still alive.
squiddly August 30, 2006 August 30, 2006 I have a 25gal with around 35# of LR. Well i hope they still alive. They should be fine. I worried about mine as well since I didn't see them for quite a long time. They're probably back there in the rock watching you even now :-)
rrubberbandman August 30, 2006 August 30, 2006 hi, i have a pair in my 20 gallon, that i got from BRK.....they were my first inhabitants...well besides hermits and snails.....so mine sit on the front porch and watch everyone.....i was scared that the shrimp had passed away....so i reached down into tank and messed up all his sand work...and within 5 minutes he was out landscaping.....he is very industrious. just give em' time and all should be well. Bryan
altezza September 6, 2006 Author September 6, 2006 well it has been more than 3 weeks..and i still havent see them, should i take out the rocks and start looking for those two love birds?
Sugar Magnolia September 6, 2006 September 6, 2006 My pair is very skittish. The goby stays at the entrance to ther cave, but when you get too close to the tank, he darts into the hole. They both will come out for pellets though. Yours are in a fairly big tank for such a tiny pair, so it's not surprising that you don't see them. They probably have built their cave somewhere in the back/middle of the tank. You could try taking out the rocks, but chances are, the pistol will hide in one of the rocks.
Charlie97L September 6, 2006 September 6, 2006 exactly............ sugar mag read my mind! i had the same thing happen with my firefish, he decided he liked it at the back of the tank until i reaquascaped. also, he hid for almost a month (i can only presume he was darting out to get scraps of food at some point)... i thought he was a goner... now he's an attention hog, always riding the front glass. give them time.

How many fire fish do you keep in your tank? I heard you should keep them in a group of three... I didn't think this was true, but I figured I'd ask
altezza September 6, 2006 Author September 6, 2006 thanks for the replies guys, i'll give them another week or two, after that i guess i have to dig up the dirt and see if they are dead or not. Just hate to see them die though, such a nice couple
Charlie97L September 6, 2006 September 6, 2006 thanks for the replies guys, i'll give them another week or two, after that i guess i have to dig up the dirt and see if they are dead or not. Just hate to see them die though, such a nice couple i bet they're fine, and just found an annoyingly unvisible place to live. ah well. it's like aneomones. they choose where they want to go. these things have minds of their own. jason, i have just 1. 3 usually doesn't work, from my research. they will fight with conspecifics. occassionally you can find a mated pair. i believe this misconception comes from the fact they do spend time in groups when juveniles. however, this changes as they mature. also, many have successfully introduced 4-5 simultaneously and removed the aggressors, but this isn't guaranteed to work. they will also fight with other similar looking gobies, such as the high fin red banded, and yashi.
rrubberbandman September 7, 2006 September 7, 2006 JASON, 3 is a big no-no...four would be better but two is just right...........unless you got a big ol' tank. Bryan
Charlie97L September 7, 2006 September 7, 2006 any word on the lovely couple? i hope they're ok! i'm looking to get a red fin high banded and pistol for my frag tank.
altezza September 14, 2006 Author September 14, 2006 any word on the lovely couple? i hope they're ok! i'm looking to get a red fin high banded and pistol for my frag tank. Yup, they finally show their faces up last monday..the goby start to coming out of the hole first then follow the shrimp
Guest Bemmer September 15, 2006 September 15, 2006 Hey Altezza, I don't have a shrimp/goby pair but I do have to Yashia Gobies. I bought them about three to four weeks ago and put them in the future seahorse tank. I had to reaquascape and I thought I lost one of the gobies because I did not see it for so long. But low and behold, yesterday after three weeks, it showed up for dinner. Both Yashias are accounted for and I am happy. But I have to say, if you want to see anyone wants to see their Yashia goby, put it in a small tank.
