treesprite February 19, 2018 February 19, 2018 What kind of standard tool could be used to grind, or in some other way, make sort of a shallow concave surface on a piece of rock (one that would hold a small amount of sand)?
mari.harutunian February 19, 2018 February 19, 2018 Maybe a dremel with a diamond bit? Depends how hard the rock is Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
treesprite February 19, 2018 Author February 19, 2018 Yeah, I don't know why I didn't think of that before asking; I guess I just haven't used my dremmel for so long that I forgot about it. I'm wondering where I will be able to find an adequate bit. I have some very small diamond coated grinding bits, but they are too small.

Maybe even a stone specific bit. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
AlanM February 19, 2018 February 19, 2018 If it's a chunk of reef rock it will probably be pretty brittle and a cheap steel bit and chisel will be able to dig a hole into it with some elbow grease, lots of dust, and lots of noise.
malacoda February 19, 2018 February 19, 2018 Depending how wide of a 'bowl' shape you're trying to make, you could also use a masonry bit in a drill. Drill a few holes ... to the depth you want ... right next to one another. Then use a hammer (by itself or with an old chisel) to tap out the stuff between the holes.

This sounds like a good way to go.
treesprite February 20, 2018 Author February 20, 2018 I'm thinking of scooping out some rocks to hold sand so that maybe the fish would have a second level of substrate. I'm not sure how I can do it in a tank this size, but I'm going to see what I can do. I have a lot of liverock to play around with, since only half of my rocks will fit in this little 50g tank (I'm trying to figure out how to fit more of it in; I have plenty in the DT already, plus some in the sump, and some in a tank that just has the rocks in it).
