I have been battling cyno for quite some time now. It's comes in patches in the sand bed and occasionally on the rocks. I have 300 total gallons and my tank is 72x30x22

I have two MP40's at 100% and two Tunze 6105's at 100%.

My nitrates and phosphates are reading 0 on Salifert test kits but the cyno is still there.

I average 1-2 35 gallon water changes monthly using RC salt and dose with ESV bionic. My RODI is registering at 280 TDS going in and 001 TDS coming out.

I have used red slime remover about 8 months ago and it worked for about 3-4 months but it came back.

I normally feed NLS pellets daily and frozen mysis/nori once a week.

I only have 12 fish in the tank. Most of them are small and two are medium size tangs.

I'm also running an ATB 1050a skimmer that pulls out nasty skimmate.

I'm not sure what I'm missing other then weekly water changes and maybe some GFO usage. But just wanted to see if anyone had any other ideas. This cyno is very annoying.

Add some GFO and it will go away. Cyano is usually caused by an imbalance between Nitrate and Phosphate.

Do you have a Hanna Checker?

Suck of some of the cyano and put in a solution of tank water/H2O2. If the water turns pink and the cyano turns green it's probably true cyano and sensitive to H2O2. You can start dosing H2O2 to defeat the cyano. If this does not happen then it is probably a relative of cyano called spirunlina and chemiclean should do wonders.  There are some great/extensive threads on this with some pseudo-scientific testing on R2R.

No Hannah. Just did a 30 gallon water change. Going to start doing some every 5-7 days. Going to suck out all the cyno and clean out the detritus in the sump. And see if I can get it gone.

Will try the other trick with the H202 and see how it goes

Do you,  your wife, or have cleaners that use any type of cleaner near your tank? How about scented candles or spray? That maybe a long shot but can aid in cyano growth.

I wont let my wife clean the room where my tank is. If she does she only uses white vinegar or sprays a rag in a different room.

Chemi clean works overnight!!!!!!!!!!! I cant begin to say how quick and well it works!!!

I have used it before. However it took two weeks for my skimmer to stop overflowing and it still came back. So I need to figure out how to get rid of it for good.

May not ever get rid of it as it is a remarkable algae that can form out of seemingly nowhere. Any tank will be susceptible. I would just get yourself a nice queen conch and maybe some ceriths and let them eat it.

I have several conch's in the tank. I just siphoned 90% of the cyno out and set up a reactor with 2 cups of GFO to start. We will see how it progresses.

I always found siphone and 2 days of black out works.  Iam fighting a small outbreak right now.  Finally getting ahead of it.
