Origami June 22, 2016 Share June 22, 2016 Once a year, or less. Muriatic acid after whatever physical removal I can perform first.
FirstContact June 22, 2016 Share June 22, 2016 Not sure if anyone else finds this true, but I seem to get a lot less precipitate by not using a heater. I also found that switching from Reef Crystals to Instant Ocean helped too.

I *seem* to get less precipitate and scum when I don't run a pump 24/7 in my tank but only run it for a short time every day. I say "seem" because I shifted over to different HDPE containers several months ago after several years in my 44-gallon Brutes, and long term performance is still to be determined. BTW, heat will stimulate precipitation. So that's probably behind what you're seeing in your mixing tank. Also, IO typically has lower levels of alk and calcium so the that also contributes to less precip.

How long and how many times in a 24 hour period do you cycle the saltwater? What size HDPE containers?
