Rainbow Wrasse Eating Shrimp?

Recommended Posts

Guest ethandvm

I have a 6-7 inch rainbow wrasse (in addition to hippo, yellow tangs, 2 firefish, flame angel, copper banded butterfly - thanks guys at BRK it is doing awesome- and a tomatoe clown. in my 120g reef tank, I recently added 2 skunk cleaners. I saw them the first few days, and not since. Do wrasses eating shrimp, or can they? The wrasse is a P-I-G. I dont think I have a Mantis, I dont hear any load noises coming from the tank.

Any ideas?

I don't know if the wrasse eats shrimp, but a mantis doesn't necessarily make loud noise. The noise to watch out for, which suggests a mantis, is a clicking sound.

There are a lot of fish called a "rainbow wrasse" some of which would eat shrimp greedily and others that likely wouldn't. Can you identify with certainty what kind of wrasse you have (scientific name)? If so, just check out the great stuff they have on wrasses at www.wetwebmedia.com. That should tell you.

I'm not sure if your wrasse is releated one I had?

I had a 5 inch bird wrasse that ate EVERYTHING, including my cleaner shrimp and my hermit crabs.

He's now back at the LFS.

The scientific names is Thalassoma lucasanum. He eats everything, he will eat anything I put in the tank. I have not seen him pick on the shrimp (when I initially put them in there). But I suppose anything is possbile. I have not heard any clicking to suggest a mantis.

yep, thats the same son of a gun in my tank. I have not seen the skunk cleaners in about 6 days.

on that note..........anyone want a Paddlefin Wrasse?

Remember when making your plan in the future, that when a fish is rated AGRESSIVE, That this doesn't mean that he is a bully to other fish and tankmates, just EATS THEM!

Most Wrasse will eat Shrimp, snails and even fish mates when they get bigger, so plan according in the future.

I had and would strongly recommend the Yellow Canary (Coris) Wrasse to anyone looking to add some color to their tank, but even mine developed a taste for my Nassarius Snails when he got around 6", but was tolreable! He never bother ANYTHING else though and was a truely beautiful tankmate!

perhaps that is the reason the peppermint shrimps have dissapear from my 135G, cause of the Leopard Wrasse (aprox. 4" long). just perhaps, but can't say for sure cause never seen him eating shrimps.
