madmax7774 April 21, 2006 April 21, 2006 Does anyone out there happen to know if the Oceanic 30 gallon hex aquarium is tempered glass, or does anyone know an easy way to tell if glass is tempered?? I want to drill mine for a custom setup, and the tempered thing would be a huge problem. I already checked their website which is pretty useless unless you want to look at pretty pictures. John

John As far as I know all tank glass in tempered, Drilling is easy if you use a dremil and a grinding stone instead of a drill bit. High speed drilling makes all the difference.
Jon Lazar April 22, 2006 April 22, 2006 I'm not in the glass industry, but I researched this a bunch in preparation for drilling a 55g tank as a refugium. What I learned is that there is no foolproof way to tell whether a piece of glass is tempered or not. Manufacturers tend to use tempered glass for the bottom of aquariums, but often not the walls. Some manufacturers have changed whether they use tempered glass over the years. I drilled the sides of two different 55g tanks. One tank was tempered and exploded, and the other was not. Your only way to know for sure is to call the manufacturer, or try drilling it and see whether it explodes or not.
Sugar Magnolia April 22, 2006 April 22, 2006 Drop them an email. customerservice@oceanicsystems.com I have an Oceanic 30 cube and know of several people who have successfully drilled them. From what I understand, only the bottom is tempered, but it would be best to contact them directly for verification. I think the hex is a 40 btw.
Guest alex wlazlak April 23, 2006 April 23, 2006 i contacted customer service with perfecto tanks, and they infomred me that they only temper the bottom of their tanks. i guess that isnt too much help for you though....
danskim April 25, 2006 April 25, 2006 On the small Oceanic tanks, they also only use tempered glass on the bottom pane (most readily available manufacturers do - AGA/Oceanic, Perfecto, Petsmart and Petco brands, etc).
geofloors April 25, 2006 April 25, 2006 I have a 40g Oceanic Stretched Hex that I had drilled a few years ago. Not tempered. George

George I know I have drilled the bottom of several perfecto tanks, so if they are tempered it didn't matter much. Again I'd like to stress the effectiveness of using a dremil. and a grinding bit. The one time I tried a glass drill bit, it was darn near impossible, you have to be perfectly steady else it catches and cracks. With a high speed dremil and grind stone, you might go through a stone or two getting the job done, but your glass will be fine.
