Reefer_Madness December 5, 2015 December 5, 2015 I have a couple of frags that came with algae on the plug. The algae is growing now. I'm not educated or confident enough to do a peroxide dip without advice. Can someone give me a quick how-to on dipping SPS frags and Zoa frags, so I don't kill em'? Dosages would be important.
YHSublime December 5, 2015 December 5, 2015 SPS frags i wouldn't peroxide dip. That's just me. Toothbrush, some saltwater, and elbow grease. Zoanthids, I just usually get a bowl from the kitchen (like what you would eat cereal out of) spritz of HP into saltwater, and mix it, then do a quick dip and swirl. Then the toothbrush with whatever can be removed. After a while the algae will turn white and just come off.
Cliff Puckstable December 5, 2015 December 5, 2015 If you're concerned, just cut the plug off. This can also reduce chance of other contaminants getting into your system. If you want the plug, I recommend a tooth brush dipped in peroxide mixed with sw. This will have immediate effects on the algae but I'm not convinced it kills it 100%. I've been doing this on all my frags since I can remember and I almost always still get bubble algae /gha growth on the plugs after a few weeks. I know we like well encrusted and healthy frags but now days I'd almost prefer a fresh cut from a colony. Just my O.
WilRams December 6, 2015 December 6, 2015 I have the same question for sps frags. As of now I just scrub with a toothbrush but it's not that effective. Anything else I peroxide dip with no fear.
Squishie89 December 6, 2015 December 6, 2015 I got some red hermits, margarita snails and trochus snails from ReefeScape, someone of those 3 has done a good job getting my coral QT 99% algae free
gws3 December 6, 2015 December 6, 2015 Algae on frag plugs is the bane of my existence! It just means you don't have enough herbivores, or the herbivores you do have can't get to the plugs. I think egg crate makes it tough for snails and hermits to get to the plugs. I plumbed in some new frag tanks to my 300 recently and am going to try not using any eggcrate. Frags will go directly on the glass bottom or on a central rock structure. I hope this allows the herbivores to clean the frag plugs which means less time for me to spend scrubbing plugs with a toothbrush.
