Larry Grenier April 12, 2006 April 12, 2006 It's my new 4" jawfish. They're known to be jumpers and I couldn't find him anywhere until I removed my hood and got a flashlight and looked into the overflow and there he was. The tank is 24" tall and the overflow has a durso and the return plumbing in it so I can't get a net in there. With the level well below the level of the tank, he's less likely to jump back out. Suggestions :wall:
Guest clownfish4 April 12, 2006 April 12, 2006 Put a net at the end of the exit pipe to the sump and yank the durso.
Guest Edwardj April 12, 2006 April 12, 2006 also, be sure there is eggcrate (the white insert in overhead lighting) or some other screen in the durso intake so such errant fish don't take a trip to the sump. I have a lawnmower blenny that makes his way in once in a while. If your return has a gate valve, crank it shut and pull the durso out. Edwardj
Caribbean Jake April 12, 2006 April 12, 2006 can you put your hand into the overflow with a plastic bag? if the net does not fit your hand and plastic bag will work as a net, make sure the palstic bag is full of water when trying to catch the fish.
stevil April 12, 2006 April 12, 2006 Put a net at the end of the exit pipe to the sump and yank the durso. That has worked for me. What exactly is eggcrate and where do you get it? One of my fish ends up in the overflow every other day...
Charlie97L April 12, 2006 April 12, 2006 not to hijack the thread, but I'm thinking about getting a firefish for my 58, and saw that they jump... i know you can put eggcrate over the top of the tank, but then doesn't that affect the lighting? since we're on the topic of EC anyway.

Most of the time its on the floor or bottom shelf. It does block some light but not a huge amount.

Guest clownfish4 April 12, 2006 April 12, 2006 It does block some light but not a huge amount. Eggcrate is actually very misunderstood. Anthony Calfo has a great article about it on the Marine Depot forums. Bascially, if you put it in one way it shoots the light out into all directions. But if you flip it over it concentrates the light straight down. If you turn off the lights in the room, you'll be able to see if the light is flooding out of the tank.
BeltwayBandit April 12, 2006 April 12, 2006 What I do is take a plastic bag and cover the intake to the durso. This way the overflow fills up and levels off with the rest of the tank (I have 2 overflows so i can get away with blocking one.) I then use a "tickle stick" to encourage the fish to come up to the surface and then either net them or in the case of firefish they just jump right back into the tank. Alternatively, when my clowns go in I wait for them to surf to the sump and then pluck them out of there with a net.

Guest clownfish4 April 12, 2006 April 12, 2006 Here is a link...but I warn, this thread is 8 pages long. http://www.marinedepot.com/FORUMS/Topic24384-13-1.aspx
rocko918 April 12, 2006 April 12, 2006 Thanks Mike So it's tapered side up for aquaria. Now i have to go home and look at mine. I do have one cut to fit so if it is the wrong way i will have to buy a new piece.

rocko918 April 12, 2006 April 12, 2006 no the one corner is cut out to fit around the stand pipe as it stick out about the water surface. Can't just flip it, won't fit back on the tank.
Guest clownfish4 April 12, 2006 April 12, 2006 Ah, well then, just cross your fingers its on the right way.

Larry Grenier April 13, 2006 Author April 13, 2006 Got em! Net, taped to the end of a stick..... very hi-tech :idea2:
Larry Grenier April 14, 2006 Author April 14, 2006 Jake, Had to look twice... kinda creeps me out Anyway he's back in the tank and seems to have an improved appetite too
