It's my new 4" jawfish. They're known to be jumpers and I couldn't find him anywhere until I removed my hood and got a flashlight and looked into the overflow and there he was. The tank is 24" tall and the overflow has a durso and the return plumbing in it so I can't get a net in there. With the level well below the level of the tank, he's less likely to jump back out. Suggestions :wall:

Put a net at the end of the exit pipe to the sump and yank the durso.

also, be sure there is eggcrate (the white insert in overhead lighting) or some other screen in the durso intake so such errant fish don't take a trip to the sump. I have a lawnmower blenny that makes his way in once in a while. If your return has a gate valve, crank it shut and pull the durso out.

can you put your hand into the overflow with a plastic bag? if the net does not fit your hand and plastic bag will work as a net, make sure the palstic bag is full of water when trying to catch the fish.

That has worked for me.

What exactly is eggcrate and where do you get it? One of my fish ends up in the overflow every other day...

not to hijack the thread, but I'm thinking about getting a firefish for my 58, and saw that they jump... i know you can put eggcrate over the top of the tank, but then doesn't that affect the lighting? since we're on the topic of EC anyway. :)

egg crate is the stuff you see in office lighting. you can get it at HD or lowes in the lighting sections. Most of the time its on the floor or bottom shelf.

It does block some light but not a huge amount.

Eggcrate is actually very misunderstood. Anthony Calfo has a great article about it on the Marine Depot forums. Bascially, if you put it in one way it shoots the light out into all directions. But if you flip it over it concentrates the light straight down. If you turn off the lights in the room, you'll be able to see if the light is flooding out of the tank.

What I do is take a plastic bag and cover the intake to the durso. This way the overflow fills up and levels off with the rest of the tank (I have 2 overflows so i can get away with blocking one.) I then use a "tickle stick" to encourage the fish to come up to the surface and then either net them or in the case of firefish they just jump right back into the tank. Alternatively, when my clowns go in I wait for them to surf to the sump and then pluck them out of there with a net.

Really, hmmm that is interesting, makes sense. Mike do you have the link to the thread?

ditto, and i would assume we would want the light heading straight down, right?

Thanks Mike

So it's tapered side up for aquaria.

Now i have to go home and look at mine. I do have one cut to fit so if it is the wrong way i will have to buy a new piece.

You don't have to buy a new piece, just flip it over.

no the one corner is cut out to fit around the stand pipe as it stick out about the water surface. Can't just flip it, won't fit back on the tank.

Ah, well then, just cross your fingers its on the right way.

There is a bad batch of skimmate going around that is causing side effects similar to those of high amounts of alcohol!!

Is that a 5 stripe clown? Or is the bottom one Nemo and the top Marlin?
