I'm afraid of RIO

Eheim seems awfully expensive

I hear the Mags are noisy

I'm lookinf for the best value in the 700-800 gph range that is quiet, reliable, not super expensive.

Suggestions/opinions?

Mag 9.

 

Not too loud and can run in sump or in-line.

 

bulletproof, just dont run it dry for 2 days.

I've been using mags for over a year and have never had any issues with noise or heat. I have a mag12 running on my system right now and it's quiet as can be.

Eheim is only about $130 for the 1262 and it comes with a two-year warranty and the backing of MANY people who say it is the best pump they've ever owned. Quality costs much less if you plan to be in this hobby more than a few years.

Yep - Eheim reliability is measured in decades, MAG reliability is measured in days.........your call.

 

Is the cost of the pump really more? A 1262 uses 80w - it compares more tword a MAG 12 @ 110w & given the life of the Eheim which is cheaper?

 

(won't even get into the fact that an Eheim will far out perform a comparable MAG)

Yea, I probably should be in the 900gph range so here are my 4 best options.

 

Eheim 1260 = 750gph+, 65w, $120

Eheim 1262 = 1000gph+, 80w, $130

Mag 9.5 = 950gph, 93w, $70

Sen 900 = 900-1045gph, 98w, $80

 

Comparable gph

Mag & Sen much cheaper up-front

Eheim much more expensive up-front, a little cheaper in the long-run due to lower wattage and long life.

Sen500. $49.99 & works fine. I am getting 390gph with a 4ft head. Quiet as a mouse.

Have had it for quite awhile. I'm betting it will last at least 2 years. heck even if it only lasts 2 years, I can get another and still

costs less than the others.

Comparable gph

Not really, a 1262 is closer to a MAG12.

 

Danner (MAG) rates their pumps with at least two times the supplied outlet. For example, a MAG 9.5 comes with a 3/4" outlet - this means the pump is rated with a 1.5" outlet = you'll never achieve the stated flow, even at zero head. Eheim pumps are rated with the supplied outlet = you can achieve at least the rated performance. There is acnedotal evidence to suggest (& a LOT of it) that Eheim rates the pump @ the Euro 50hz - use the pump on the US 60hz & you get even higher performance.

So Eric, if I could spend the extra bucks, I should be comparing the Mag9 and Sen900 to the Eheim 1260, right? That one is $120 and 65w.

There's some data over @ RC - I think a 1260 is stronger than a MAG7 (certain) & weaker than a 9.5 ....more like a 8.5 :lol:

 

It really boils down to the amount of flow you want through the sump. Given the normal up & over for a return I'd guess that a 1260 would give you about 600+gph.

 

I use a 1262. It starts at the pump 1/ 1" plumbing -> 2' up -> 3' over -> split via a Y -> up 2' (on ea) -> transition to 3/4" -> up 27" -> two U over the overflow

 

With that I'm guess I have close to 800gph through the sump. Skimmer takes 300, fuge gets 200gph, and the dump return is stronger than both the fuge & skimmer...maybe 325gph?

 

I can also say with certainty that a 1260 will outpace a single 600gph overflow with common plumbing (seen folks complain about that one before).

I have an AGA 65gal with a megaflow.

Right now it has a Rio 2100 for the return split into 2 outlets. Very low flow and you know the rest.

 

What size tank do you have the 1262 on?

150 but that's really irrelevant - I use streams & a CL for most of my flow. The pump really only feeds the skimmer & the fuge. Which is why I chose a 1262 - based on paper & MAG experience I thought it would be just enough when in fact it's more than I need.

 

I'm more of a low flow through the sump fan - fewer issues such as microbubbles, noise, and you can get by with a smaller pump............but generally that means more in tank flow which as we know depends on livestock (don't ya just love that everything in this hobby is so simple :lol: )

Yeah, despite a few warnings I bought a 1262 based on calculating headloss and in fact I ended up with WAY too much pump and a bit of a micro-bubble problem as the water doesn't have time to settle in the sump. I am running a 1.5" overflow on a 75, but only have a 20 gallon sump, and had to dial back the overflow and dial back the pump output with a ball valve. That thing is POWERFUL. In hindsight--and I still may do this--I would have even gone with a 1250. If you're shooting for 700-800 GPH, a 1262 will meet or exceed expectations and a 1260 will probably be right on target, depending on plumbing.

Likely a 1" overflow? If that's the case then a 1260 would probably match up pretty well (near max on capacity).

Larry, I agree. Go with a 1260. 15 watts less and still GREAT flow. Believe me the 1262 is too powerful for a 20 high sump. Also, do you have any pictures or illustrations of the T'ed off version you were thinking about?

No pics or illustrations but I'll try to take a pic once I put it together. It will allow me to route all the flow to the main tank or some of it thru a canister with whatever I want to put in it like carbon, polyfilter, chemipure, underwear... and then back into the sump.

I have had a 1040 (now 1048) running my tank since 1992 or so. It has been working flawlessly for the entire time. I use mine immersed.

 

OK, there was the one time that I broke the propeller and had to replace it (1996 or so). But it still worked (with a lot of noise and low flow) while the part was being ordered and delivered. GREAT STUFF.

 

The 1260 has 4 times more flow. You need that for the extra 13 gallons you are pushing! :blink:

I think there was a major upgrade or transfer of data a few years back that made numbers and dates out-of-sync.
