WilRams March 29, 2015 March 29, 2015 Plugging things in tonight I realized I haven't thought about surge protection. I searched online and found a lot of threads going straight to ups.. Can I simply plug it into a surge protector and be done with it? Or should I go with a ups? Im not really interested in the backup feature more so the protection.
DaveS March 30, 2015 March 30, 2015 You want surge protection to your Apex! A UPS will probably suffice but don't forget to get an Ethernet surge protector of you are plugged in there. I had protection from power but didn't think about Ethernet. Blew the MOSFETs in my apex unit twice in one year. Neptune fixed it first time for free and changed me $160 the 2nd time. Once I figured out what was happening and got a protector, I haven't had any problems for the last 3 years.

I would think everything on the 5 VDC bus would be protected just by stepping down from AC to DC.
Bruleyii March 30, 2015 March 30, 2015 A surge protector will only protect from surges but a UPS will protect from drops in power. This can be damaging to electronics over a long period of time (at least this is what ive always been told).
