basic powerhead issue

I've got two Maxi Jet's that I'm setting up for water flow in my new 55 gallon. I want to make sure I'm getting it right the first time so I thought I would ask. It seems that each of these should be using the venturi plug instead of the air control valve with the tube hook up, is that correct? Also, do people usually use the hook with one suction cup that goes over the side of the tank or the three suction cup set-up?

Finally, I have another MaxiJet 1200 that is for use with the AquaC Remora, am I correct that this one gets the venturi plug also and most of the other parts are not used. It really just gets inserted into the tube of the skimmer and plugged in?

Thanks for all the help!

First, figure a way to mount the bracket (hang it) other than the suction cups. They will fail in time and usually fall into the anemone (or something important) under it.

Just use the powerhead for water movement. Don't worry about the airline on those.

Don't know about that skimmer, so cant answer the last.

I didnt use the venturi plug on, I just have the intake hose of the skimmer clamped directly to the output of the powerhead. I dont have anything over the input of the powerhead either but my powerhead is inside the surface prefilter cup that you can get as an addon. If you arent using the prefilter cup you might want to consider using one of the input strainers.

I have 3 maxi-jet powerheads on my 55....one in each corner and one in the center. I have all 3 sitting ontop of the prefilter no suction cups...just sits on the sand. I cut the prefilter at different levels to get water movement at different levels without disterbing sand. I also have good motion around and threw the rocks. you could get a few pieces of plexi and make your own hang on tank adapters because the ones that come with the maxi-jet do not go down very far. Its a simple DIY. I had to build one for my heater. suction cups are useless.

figure out what level you want the powerheads. measure the distance from that level to the top of the tank.

go the home depot and get a piece of plexi about the right length pluss 3"-4'" inches and cut 1" strips

use a heat source to bend the top 4" inches in a U so it will hang over the tank and drill 2 holes for a zip tie 3" from the bottom. now zip tie the powerhead to your new powerhead mount.
