Niger Trigger aka Polo

So last Thursday I stopped by Marco's to pick up some supplies and stare at his fish collection. I couldn't help myself, and I took Polo home. Seeing Marcos tanks and system validated everything he's been saying on here. The fish are healthy and happy (read fat), and I'm confident that I'm introducing a disease free fish into my system. Polo acclimated very well and was swimming when I came home from work the next day. He started swimming around over the weekend, has found "his" cave, and is not as skittish at movement around the tank. He's come out for pellet and LRS feedings. He also stole seaweed from my tangs. I expect to see even more of his personality come out as he finishes settling in.

Here's a short video of my new fish!

THANK YOU MARCO & ERC!

Those fish are rock'n out!  So how are your corals going to do with that toothed monster in there?

So they don't eat corals (thankfully).  The biggest danger is to inverts, and I haven't seen him molesting any of my snails yet.  I'll have to do some negative reinforcement training if that happens.  I've had triggers before that wouldn't touch them.  The other issue with the corals is the water quality with big eaters, but my skimmer is rated for double my tank size, and I tend to be a conservative feeder.  Hopefully that will help.

His colors are brilliant!  Depending on the light, he ranges from a sapphire blue to a deep violet purple.  He's gorgeous!  And all my triggers have been "male."  Don't ask me why.

I caught some beautiful triggers down in Florida fishing, but they were all about 12" and too big for my tank!

Great fish!  I always enjoy watching them hover over the reef.  Has he been eyeing your snails?

Not yet, thankfully!  I'll have to wait and see as he settles in though.

I thought they ate coral....learn something new everyday! I figured with those teeth they needed to file them down and did it with coral. Maybe just with snails and crabs.

Technically you're supposed to feed them something hard shelled to file down the teeth. But I never have. I owned one that ate my snails and another that did not. I'm hoping Polo will not either. But they definitely do not eat coral. Great addition for your new tank!

I used to fish a lot in the keys, funny, evertime you catch a cool fish you want to bring him home.  Back when I was in my 20s i used to do salt water.  My dad had a house in marathon and I was single and went there many times a year.   Used to raise eyebrows coming home on the airplane carrying a double six packer in each hand with bags of fish and battery operated bait pumps on them.   SIGH   can't eve bring a tube of shampoo on the planes anymore!  Airline used to be real lax, used to carry my speargun on the plane, they made you stash it away in the coat closet in the front of the plane.  Of course gas used to cost less then 60 cents a gallon back then!

Well they definitely don't eat corals. But shrimp are fair game. I just like the trigger far more than I like shrimp.

So the shrimp is done.........poor shrimp.....at least Polo's teeth will be ground down with some shrimp shell.

So where did you get the name Polo? It is not a seahorse :)

I didn't have any shrimp so there have been no blood sacrifices.

Polo because of "Marco Polo." So he's kind of named after Marco.....

I'm adding a trigger to my reef also..though one that's more possibly compatible...

Thought I didn't have any shrimp left...saw 2 chilling out with my huge shrimp goby yesterday though...

They have been hiding for a month...so I'm hoping they will be able to keep hiding, lol

Those are beautiful too! I had one in Miami after my niger committed suicide. When the males develop that deep throat color they are truly gorgeous! I love that they beg for food and grunt at you!

My last Niger wanted to be petted, he would swim p to my hand in the tank and push against it like a cat! Lol.....I got all 4 triggers when they were less than an inch long and had them for almost 7 years....

Shut the front door!  That is awesome.  Mine definitely didn't do that, but I'd be so happy if he did

Polo because of "Marco Polo." So he's kind of named after Marco.....

I mistakenly thought you said "my shirmp", where in reality you said they eat shrimp.

Awwwwwhhhhh! you named it after Marco!  I bet he is honored!

He said somewhere (LRS post) that it will never get old!

Just an update.  After a week, Polo is still doing great!  He's healthy, eating, and active!  He's no longer timid with the other fish and is actually displacing my foxface for food (she takes food from the tangs, so that's saying something).  Also, I still have tons of snails in my tank!  I haven't seen him even glance at one, but if he is eating any when my back is turned, I can't even tell.

Great fish.  Thanks Marco!
