I picked up this really cool blown glass octopus while on vacation.  Anyone know if blown colored glass is ok for tanks.  I imagine it is because the color isnt painted on but in the actual glass.

I don't see a problem with it. Plenty of glass in my tank, seeing as it's made out of glass.

What color is your octopus? I think it depends on the color the glass. I believe some reds contain copper, some blues contain cobalt etc...

If the color is indeed in the glass, and not painted on, then you will be fine. Glass is inert and so the migration rates of heavy elements out of the glass and into water is so small that it is not worthy of concern. Many scientific studies have been done to show that metals stay put in glass. (e.g. will the cobalt blue bottle that holds my liquor eventually poison me? Nope.)

Paint on glass is a whole other issue. But even in that case, a quick treatment with clear sealant would solve the problem. With some spray sealant you can put anything in the tank.

This is the piece.  Its small and i want to hide it kinda like a easter egg so you wont notice it at first.

I saw this on a Nat Geo or animal planet show and I thought it was so cool and I might get some for our crabs in the new tank.

Maybe contact them and ask?  It might be ok as they use colored glass for shells too.

Iam pretty sure its ok.  The color is defiantly in the glass and glass doesn't leach.  The alcohol reference made alot of sense.  I just think it would be a nice piece to add so when visitors check out my tank they find it after a minute of looking.  It was blown by 2 brothers out of oregon called Marzet.
