AlanM July 17, 2014 Share July 17, 2014 Cool. He's got a good story that has some criticism, but also some optimism. Nice that he's not all downer. He seems like someone who would be a great evangelist for the reefs.
Grav July 18, 2014 Share July 18, 2014 Colin is the best. Could be the hardest working, best aquarium industry / science community translator, environmentalist, and coral wholesaler in the world.
wade August 20, 2014 Share August 20, 2014 Just saw this topic resurface this morning: Port Miami expansion damages sea life, state claimsThe massive dredging project to expand Port Miami is damaging sea life, Florida inspectors claim. The $205 million expansion is having a "profound effect" on coral, sea grass and other species, the state Department of Environmental Protection wrote yesterday in a letter to the Army Corps of Engineers, which is managing the work. "A fast response to this issue may minimize long-lasting impacts," state inspectors said. The Army Corps said it was reviewing the findings. The dredging will remove 6 million cubic yards from the port's bottom to make room for larger ships coming through the expanded Panama Canal next year. In a deal with Miami Dade County, the Army Corps agreed to transplant some coral colonies. But opponents claim the damage can't be reversed if the work continues without changes. "We believe there is a way this project can be done better and that's simply not being done right now," said Rachel Silverstein, executive director of Biscayne Bay Waterkeeper (Jenny Staletovich, Miami Herald, Aug. 19).
