JR-Tanked150 April 9, 2014 April 9, 2014 So I'm are driving to Fl in a few days and I'm bringing some corals down to my sister's house and some home. They will be in the car for 2 days. So I'm looking for any advice on the best way to get them down there. I'm bringing an assortment of lps and sps.
smallreef April 9, 2014 April 9, 2014 Just getting oxygen in the bags instead of straight tying or whatever...and I think you'll be fine...
TrueTricia April 9, 2014 April 9, 2014 Can you get some gorgonians from the ocean while you're down there and bring them back? Jk.
sachabballi reef April 9, 2014 April 9, 2014 i drove my entire tank from FL to VA when I moved up here and lost nothing. I used battery operated air and stopped and checked temps...this time of the year you should be good. If you are bringing sps I would put the the frag plug in some styrofoam so its safe and floats. You won't have any issues...don't sweat it.

I am from Tampa/St pete area and go down there several times a year, I always stock up on Coral/fish that I cant find up here I usually stop by the LFS store I buy from down there and load up right before I hit the road. it's about a 16hr drive for me I just ask for extra water/air. stuff is usually in my tank within 24 HRS. I think if you use a battery operated Air pump you should be G2G, I dont but i'm also transporting in half the time. I think you will be fine, I have done it 3 or 4 times and never lost anything
ctenophore April 9, 2014 April 9, 2014 Rather than bagging everything, just put them all into one large cooler with a battery air pump or two. Or a powerhead if your car has a built in AC outlet. Better to have water flow and risk a little bit of contact between colonies. You could put plastic dividers made from thin rigid plastic (e.g., those thin cutting boards) if you know they might burn each other.
JR-Tanked150 April 9, 2014 Author April 9, 2014 Yes I have a car charger adapter I can plug in two items. And its going to be in the car for close to 40 hours. I have to swing by GA and stay the night and then drive to Ocala the next day. (With 2 kids so lots of stops).

sen5241b April 9, 2014 April 9, 2014 Try a battery powered air pump and this thing with a low watt heater. These things can be funny with sine wave so try it first.
sen5241b April 9, 2014 April 9, 2014 Would an air pump be better than a small powerhead? I say yes because you will probably have a lid on the container and a small powerhead even with surface tension can't get fresh air. The bigger issue is maintaining stable temp
sachabballi reef April 9, 2014 April 9, 2014 I used coolers and styrofoam to cushion. We took 3 days to drive up and it was first well of June. To will have no problems this time of year for 40 hours... Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk
JR-Tanked150 April 9, 2014 Author April 9, 2014 What about a heater in the container? I was thinking about using a bucket and stacking the corals using egg crate for levels.
sen5241b April 10, 2014 April 10, 2014 test with a low wattage heater. A high wattage heater even with a good thermostat can overheat a 5G bucket.
sen5241b April 10, 2014 April 10, 2014 Also, I put a 5G plastic bucket on my porch in freezing temps and it held its temp at 80 for a very long time. Maybe you can just keep the temp in your car stable. Get a little thermometer.
Rob A April 10, 2014 April 10, 2014 If you are going to have something plugged into the cig lighter you might want to bring a few spare fuses. We had something (not fish related) rigged up once that worked great in the driveway but blew the fuse an hour later on a road trip. Depending on how secure things are, if they aren't sealed in bags up for instance, you might want to have some spare water made up-One time I was transporting fish from VA to CT which is only 8 hours or so but a hose from my pump popped off and came out of its container and pumped a bunch of salt water out of the "system". I scrambled to find a source of water and ended up buying bottled water at a gas station and mixing it right there. That was 20 years ago and I didn't know I didn't need something as fancy as what I had rigged up...
s2nhle April 12, 2014 April 12, 2014 Be careful with the cigaret lighter and the heat. it may burn your electrical wire and fuse.
Incredible Corals April 12, 2014 April 12, 2014 How much are you sending. Would you want to use our FedEx account for discounted rates? We have boxes and all that stuff you can have for free.

Thanks for the offer, but we are driving down for spring break and staying a week. And dropping off some corals for my sister and bringing some back. Thought it would be easier to bring with us instead of mailing.

I have to say, this post really speaks volumes to the type of business you run, as well as to your involvement in this community. I can only think of a rare few that would take the time to throw out an offer like this. Really top notch and respectable. Thanks for being a part of the club!

Grav April 13, 2014 April 13, 2014 (edited) I take stuff to my brother in CT all the time. It is an 8 hour drive, plus time to pack up the kids and time when we get there to say hello to the family and stuff. Bags, rubber bands and a styro cooler are all you need for 5-8 XL, 20 Medium, or 40 frags. Assuming you can keep them at near room temp (72-78 degrees) during the trip you will be fine for 12-24 hours. 24-48 and you should use oxygen or an air pump. There are great ones that run on D batteries and serve as an auto-on air supply if your power goes out later... can save your whole tank. 2 full days is rough. If we have a livestock shipment and it misses a flight connection causing it to take 48 hours or more, we usually have losses.... but packed in O2, most of the coral live. 3 days and I would expect everything to be dead. We have bags, rubber bands and styros I'd be happy to give you. battery air pumps are under $20. shoot me an email. Phil@reefescape.net Edited April 13, 2014 by Grav
JR-Tanked150 April 13, 2014 Author April 13, 2014 Thanks for the offer, maybe next time. On another note highway 95 south bound over spring break is a nightmare. I need some coral therapy this week. Any good store around Ocala or Tampa?
