AlanM March 21, 2014 March 21, 2014 I've been a bit of an Apex basher lately pooh-poohing Fusion as not all that because I can't do the fancy lighting wizard with my VDM-controlled lights and complaining about profile and outlet programming and the bass-ackward way they do stuff. However, for when we vacation, I finally set up my auto-feeder that I got from QR about a month ago. It sounds like it's drilling holes in wood or tumbling rocks or something when it runs, but it's pretty cool, actually. It has a little rubber gasket that keeps the food dry, even teensy 0.5mm SA hatchery pellets, which are my fishes favorites. When you plug it in you get a special outlet that is very intuitive to configure. For just shy of $100 it was a nice addition to the Apex. Also it doesn't hang over the edge of the tank. My fish are chickens and when I tried to use an autofeeder that was permanently hanging over they wouldn't go near it to eat the food. Plus I either got too much out of that one or nothing. This one seems to have reasonably fine control down to small particle sizes and works well.
dread240 March 21, 2014 March 21, 2014 It's not whisper quiet by any means, but compared to 2 of the others I've owned this thing makes no noise at all lol. For some reason manufacturers of automatic fish feeders decided they all must run at least 80db
Orion March 21, 2014 March 21, 2014 Alan, Can you post a couple of pictures of it on here? I am curious if it would fit on my deep blue rimless with a screen top.
AlanM March 22, 2014 Author March 22, 2014 I will try. I have it on my deep blue rimless 75, for what it's worth, but no screen top. It has a very small lip that grabs on to the edge on the inside and a screw that tightens it on the outside. It also comes with some feet that you can use to sit it on a flat surface next to the tank or some velcro if you have something to attach it to on the side or something, so it's pretty versatile. I would think it would drop pellets through the screen into a feeding ring just fine.
dread240 March 22, 2014 March 22, 2014 I need to redo my screen top on my 75, as it used to be tight on all the edges and now with the feeder it sticks up on the one side (nothing too major) I drop it through the screen just fine
AlanM March 22, 2014 Author March 22, 2014 Here is a pic of it grabbing the edge. If the screentop comes over the edge, it would need to get shifted for it to work.
AlanM March 22, 2014 Author March 22, 2014 Actually, you could set a book or small cutting board on the corner of the tank, put the rubber feet on the apex feeder and set the feeder on it without attaching the clamp part. Then it would drop pellets happily right through the screen top holes. When not using it you could just unplug it and set it in the cabinet.
Orion March 22, 2014 March 22, 2014 This is true. All you need now is a web cam for the tank while you are out of town
