I've always been curious how often ppl do a routine water change. I'll start...

My 60g reef:

just did my first water change in over 6 months - 10%

My gf's 260g reef:

monthly - 20-25%

Conclusion - I'm the lazy one! :o

Your lazy? HAH!

90g Reef + 20G Long sump

1 yr old

NEVER done a water change.. not even after the cycle.. Mostly it's because I use distilled water in my tank, as I lack an RO/DI... I just add makeup w/ kalk and salt (rarely, just to handle creep) as needed...

Current Setup:

75g Display Tank with 120# plus of LR probably holding about 60-65g of actual water.

29g Sump holding about 20-22g of water with baffles

20g Frag tank holding about 15g of water

Total about 100g of water being displaced.

I drain 5-6g per week out either the front of the tank or out of the sump when destrius builds up in sump.

Replace with 6g bucket of pre-mixed salt water that I made 2-3 days old minimum that I pump with a MJ1200 pump 225gph pump back into sump.

Evaporation is replaced daily (about 1-2g per day) into sump.

Actually voted at 10%, but with my figures, should have voted at 20%!!!

I try to do 10g on my 90g with a 29g sump, total actual water volume just above 100g, so in all 10% every three weeks.

I then take some of the main display water I took out and do a water change in the 10g hospital tank with 2 chromis as permenant residents.

5 gallons every weekend on a total volume of about 150 G = 3.3 percent

but that ends up being more than 13 percent a month.

The 5 gallon volume is not that strange -it is the size of my salt bucket that I add a bit of ro/di water to all during the week- I keep a heater and little powerhead running in it all the time.

Rotate my used water to my 54g corner tank and the used form that out the door to keep the weeds down along the fence. :D
