Tech's acrylic 2g Nano Build

Hello everyone!

So the saltwater fever is still in effect with me lol!  I "borrowed" my 2g acrylic tank from my son.... what... he wasn't using it so LOL!  Anyway, I was wondering it the nano specialist would help me out with it.

Here is what I've done so far:

Used 50/50 water from my DT and the other 50 came from my pre-maid RO water.  (DT up for 7 months)

LR and sand from my DT.  About a whole 2lbs. of LR and I'm guessing around one half pound of sand.

A submersible tuned heater (Maybe 4 inches long).  It is keeping the water temp at about 78/79.

Zero filtration... I have a little filter in there, but it doesn’t have the little carbon cartridge in there... just using it for oxygen/water movement lol... What should I use for filtration??

As for the lighting LOL... right now It only has six tiny white LED's in there that is barely lit LOL, tomorrow I'm getting a Boost PAR30 from a WAMAS Member (Yay can't wit)... what's you guys take on this PAR30 on such a small tank?

I plan to put zoas, GSP, one clown, and one piece of SPS of some sort in there… It’s so small not sure what I’ll put in there honestly. LOL!

Any advice anyone can give me with the little set ups would be awesome!

I will post pictures of it when I get home from work :-)

Thank you,

Tony

Sounds great! I have a 3 gallon Picotope that I enjoy. Par 30 should be good for that tank. I'm still running mine with a stock filter believe it or not. It's a puny little AC type. It actually does fine with what I'm asking of it (filled with filter floss). Plus I need to add a little powerhead. Funny though, everything is okay - lps and clove polyps, sexy shrimp, a yellow clown goby, a scarlet leg hermit, and various snails. Water changes are a breeze.

The only reason I may move it on is because it's on my desk and I end up having trouble focusing (literally) because I glance at the bowed tank and back to my laptop too often. :)

Thanks for posting.

How long have you had it up and running?

Thanks for the advice on the BoostPAR30, now all I have to do is figure out how I’m going to mount it... the ceiling is only about 4 inches from the top of the tank...

I think it's good that you glance at it more than the laptop... when you take it away you'll notice the difference lol!

I think you are talking about the exact filter I have!  As for the powerhead, I don’t know what it the world I can put in it... it's so tiny! LOL!

Your Nano sounds just like what I want this one to look like!

Oh yeah, WC's are as easy to do with a paper cup LOL!  Now that's what I’m talking about!

Wow, what a HUGE difference, thanks Ed! Sorry for the pic, nearly impossible to get a good one.

Now to get a nano pump lol and start putting some zoas in... BTW should I wait a little to make sure there is no cycle first?

Wow, that install worked perfectly.  I'm glad you told me about your space considerations which led me to think about giving you the light socket fixture.  And it looks like just the perfect distance above the tank.  Great job!

I just realized that if you have any heat issues with the LED, you clearly will have adequate ventilation for the heatsink, LOL.

It turned out great! My wife really likes it. I kept it on throughout the night, so for about 8 hrs. No issues of course... How long should I keep this light on for the corals?

What's your take on waiting to see if it tries to cycle?

I think you can treat this light like any other with a 8-12 hour photo period, however LEDs that close could be deceivingly brighter than T5s higher up so watch out for signs of too much light.

If your LR and sand is from your other tank and we'll established, you might not have much of a cycle at all!!!

Okay, cool.  The LR and sand came from my 36g, I wil just test it tonight since it's been a week since I put it up.  It would be nice to not have to wait.  I'd like to put a clown in there and take a couple zoas out of the other tank to put in this one

:-)

anybody know how often I should do a water change in this little 2g, and how much?  After reading some other posts on WAMAS, it seems as though I dont need a skimmer, but the WC's are even more vital to the tank...

Today I'm getting this powerhead from Wal-Mart (Hydor Koralia Pico Evo-Mag Circulation Pump), It seems like it should do the trick with only zoas, GSP, clown Goby (Getting him soon) I'll be sure to post when I do :-) whatcha think?

Let me know how that pump works for you. I've not had much luck with Hydor products overall, although for the price and size, it seems like it would be worth a shot.

I sure will.  From reading the reviews, I've see where people are adding them to up to 10g nano tanks and being happy witht he results.  Apparently you can adjust the flow rate even lower than 180gph which is pretty good for me and my 2g lol.  I'll get let you know!

Should I keep the little filter in there with a little carbon insert?  I'd like to get rid of it just to have more room inside the tank?

Anyone know if I should put a cleaner shrimp in this 2g and it be happy?  I'd sure like one in there :-)

I had 2peppermint shrimp in mine...no problem....

as far as the filter, carbon does nothing to hurt so may want to use it...

and the PH....same one I had in my pico...worked well and its semi adjustable...

Okay, thanks for your advice.  How often did you change the filter?  I'eve heard that you shouldn't keep them running because they develop Nitrates?  Whats your take on that?

Good news on the PH :-)

Ok so last night was painful lol. Ended up getting the marineland 400 powerhead/utility pump/circulation pump instead... Wal-mart didn't have the pico pump
