A saltwater hobbyist now for twenty five years since age 11, John began working at a large regional aquarium store as soon as he obtained working papers in high school, resulting in a house full of tanks before going off to college. In college he went on to study reefs in Bermuda, the Galapagos Islands and Ecuador where he lived (and met his wife!) for about two years after obtaining his B.S. in biology. John now lives in Northern Virginia with his wonderfully supportive wife and two young children, and keeps over 1000 gallons of saltwater aquariums, most being SPS dominant. In addition to publishing articles and speaking at conferences, including three past MACNAs, John has spoken to reef clubs in over twenty states. His systems have been featured in publications in Asia, Europe, and the United States. These include the newly released book “The Coral Reef Aquarium” by Tony Vargas, which profiles two of his systems, including a 10 gallon “kitchen nano” from over ten years ago, and his current SPS system. John is also one of just two people to have received the prestigious Reef Central Tank of the Month for two different systems (September ’04 and January ’11), both SPS dominant, where he is known by his username and childhood nickname, Copps. In the summer of 2013 John will be building his largest SPS system yet, with a 1300 gallon display that will be installed in a house he and his wife are having built. In addition to his reefkeeping at home, John travels yearly with work to Hawaii and Guam, where most free time is spent underwater Guest Speaker: Brittany ShamenekBrittany fell in love with all things under the sea when she was very young. In college, she began volunteering at the National Zoo’s Invertebrate Exhibit, which would turn out to be the beginning of her journey into aquaria and scientific research. Since, Brittany has worked as a service technician for a D.C. area showroom and on-site aquarium management company Reef eScape, and as an aquarist’s assistant at the National Aquarium’s Animal Care Center caring for the large predators now housed in the new Blacktip Reef exhibit. Most recently, she packed her bags and moved to Hawaii for five months to complete an internship at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology. Here, she contributed to research being conducted in the fields of coral reproductive biology and cryobiology. While at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology, she maintained several flow-through systems housing coral used for spawning collection and various other experiments. Now back on the mainland, Brittany has returned to Reef eScape, and maintains two 325-gallon quarantine systems, a 660-gallon coral system, as well as various show tanks, including a 265-gallon FOWLR, two 30-gallon nanos, and a 16-gallon nano. Too much of a nomad to currently keep a large aquarium at home, Brittany enjoys her 5-gallon freshwater nano, which houses her crayfish, “Gumbo.” Special thanks to theses sponsors. If our MD member can't get us school in MD in time, we have Kilmer Middle School in Vienna, VA reserved as backup plan. Trying to hold meeting in MD for members over there. Gatortailale October 4, 2013 Author Share October 4, 2013 Out of respect & as a courtesy to our guest speaker - as we try to do at all WAMAS meetings - the Officers request that vendors & members try to complete all sales, trades, & swaps either prior to the start of the talk, or after the talk. We have added a little more "free time" in the agenda at the start of the meeting to allow for this. Thus, we will be requesting that each vendor turn their lights off during the talk & stop sales during this time. Vendors should be able to access the hall at 11:15 to start setup. We are mindful of the effort it takes and we appreciate the extra work vendors & members make to come out and setup a display and take it back home at the end of the day. Hopefully it will be a win for all involved. Finally, if you are a vendor or member who plans to come & exhibit, please contact me or one of the other officers so we can add you to the meeting post and emails that will be sent in next few days about the meeting so we can market you.
