Guest jamjam_77 November 8, 2005 November 8, 2005 Does anybody know if there are any restrictions on bringing corals as a carry on item? I'm in Colorado and will be flying to Dulles and wanted to bring some zoos and other miscallaneous frags. I dont know if they would consider the rock its attached to a weapon.
Caribbean Jake November 8, 2005 November 8, 2005 It will be wise to call the airline and TSA, they probably have a list of do/don't carry on items. A phone call may be all you need to be sure. If you don't want to carry them, go ahead and send them FedEx overnight, but make sure they are well packaged in a cooler and with oxygen to make the trip safe.

Guest jamjam_77 November 8, 2005 November 8, 2005 I called up United and they put me on hold for about 5 minutes as they contacted the right people and said it was cool no problem to bring corals as a carry on. So I'm happy cause I got some real nice zoos here in Colorado Springs.
flowerseller November 8, 2005 November 8, 2005 A guy that stayed with Sonya and I for MACNA took back Dr Mac frags and several from my tank plus 2 fish as carry on on a United flight. No problems.
WDLV November 9, 2005 November 9, 2005 (edited) I personally know a person who did have a problem. He called the airline and got the OK but when he showed for the flight, they turned him away. To make a long story short, he had to ship them to his new home several states away. To be on the safe side you may want to call two times and talk to different people to see if the answer changes. I personally prefer smuggling.... Much more exciting that way! B) Edited November 9, 2005 by WDLV
Guest Leishman November 9, 2005 November 9, 2005 Go to the TSA desk and get them to seal the box w/"TSA searched" tape. They will run it through the x-ray then approve it. Just be sure to tell them that they are double bagged in O2 and in a styro box (TSA regulations for live fish and corals as carry on luggage, it took me 2 days to get that info!). I did this on the way back from a business trip to St Louis, I found a large blue tort at a price I could not pass up on.
Guest jamjam_77 November 9, 2005 November 9, 2005 I ended up using a plastic lunch box, brought back my Niger that a friend was holding for me and some very nice zoos that I couldnt pass up on. Had no problems, I'm glad everything worked out.
Guest Larry-T November 10, 2005 November 10, 2005 No, the X-ray dose used for carry-on luggage is far too small to harm something sent through the machine a few times. The machines used for checked luggage, however, are much stronger. I don't how how much of a dose they provide, but even TSA warns people not to pack unexposed or undeveloped film as carry-on luggage. Can the x-ray harm the fish? 44741
Guest jamjam_77 November 13, 2005 November 13, 2005 I was curious too abut wether xrays would harm but nah everyting is doing good.
Guest Yomeister66 November 13, 2005 November 13, 2005 I personally know a person who did have a problem. 44582 I remember that. But that person was trying to ship the contents of his 300 gallon aquarium as checked baggage, not a few fish / frags as carry-on. Big difference as far as the airlines and TSA (Thousands Standing Around) is concerned.
