L8 2 RISE July 27, 2013 Share July 27, 2013 We've all heard that you should keep a sponge or filter pad in your sump so that you can set up a qt tank in an instant if need be. The problem is, what happens after you use that sponge with copper? You can't put it back into the sump, right? Just looking for suggestions/ what does everyone else do? Origami July 28, 2013 Share July 28, 2013 Sam, the sponge in the sump technique is used to populate the sponge with bacteria so that it can provide some biological filtration in a QT tank. When you add copper, though, it kills off the bacteria, so the sponge will no longer serve that purpose. Therefore, remove it before you add copper to the hospital tank.
