sachabballi reef June 18, 2013 June 18, 2013 awesome Jack! Glad to hear you did it chemical free.....keep at it a little longer than you think you need just to be sure
howaboutme June 18, 2013 Author June 18, 2013 Thanks! Just to add something for all of the other newbies who are starting tanks....Patience cannot be emphasized, especially when it comes to stocking your tank. I cannot begin to tell you how difficult it would have been to do this naturally if my sandbed and rocks were full of colonies or frags. I can understand resorting to outside help in that situation. It's very difficult to hold back, even now. I wanted one of those clams at QR yesterday but I held strong! So just be really thoughtful about how you want to stock your tank and be aware of the cycle that exists outside of the nitrogen cycle. Once your tank is cycled, it doesn't mean you can add everything. My 2 cents.

howaboutme July 4, 2013 Author July 4, 2013 So....at 5 weeks, all cyano is gone! I took advantage of being away from home by leaving lights out and no feeding for a few days. Before that, there were spots here and there on the sand and the rocks of cyano still. But after the complete lights out and no added nutrients for a few days, there is no sign of that bad stuff. Of course, I am under no illusion that it won't come back but at least I can start at zero again and update my maintenance / feeding routine to make sure this doesn't happen again. And if it does, I know what to do. Actually, I feel kind of bad for posting this positive thread regarding ridding cyano considering the recent thread about the loses after using red slime. Hopefully this will help everyone as it has helped me. All I did (and did not do) is listed a few posts up. Compare this photo w/ my first photo in this thread, which wasn't a true representation of the problem at its height. It's night and day. The sand hasn't been cleaner since coming out of the bag!
