Orion May 19, 2013 May 19, 2013 I did my weekly water change this morning, and also did some other maintenance. Cleaned the skimmer/skimmer cup, trimmed chaeto, and replaced the filter media (Chemi-pure elite, purigen, and filter floss). After all that I noticed the water smells a little funky. Not like a rotten egg smell, but just funky. Makes the room smell a little too. It surprised me because I use carbon, water clarity, and livestock are fine. Any ideas?
smallreef May 19, 2013 May 19, 2013 Hhhrrrmmm ... Does your RODI water by itself smell? They put a lot of chlorine in my water this week so when I made a new batch of saltwater and it had a different smell too....

sachabballi reef May 19, 2013 May 19, 2013 hmmm you all live in different areas and states....did all water companies do this? Seems odd...lol
DaveS May 19, 2013 May 19, 2013 When the seasons change the water company will change their chlorination mix. Many munipalities do this.
wade May 19, 2013 May 19, 2013 While in NC they did this each spring for about a month. It helps purge the line of any potential growth.
smallreef May 19, 2013 May 19, 2013 And this is another reason I miss living across from Seattle.... We used straight aquifer water... Only treatment is UV....
wade May 19, 2013 May 19, 2013 I have well water here. No chlorine or other additivies. I run it through an all-house filter, then a softener... the problem is it has 22ppm of silica and 4ppm nitrates in it. I end up having to use a high quality RO/DI just to clean up my almost clean water.
