Guest alex wlazlak October 4, 2005 October 4, 2005 so i bought a seabae anemone a few weeks ago, its doing great, and i was wondering how they reproduce, and how long does it usually take, and how big does it need to be before it reproduces. also, i have some xenia and my grandpa came over and i offered him some, he said yes and i pulled some off. it didnt come off to easily and i had to dig at it with my finger nail and riped it off the rock. do you guys think it will survive in thier tank? the thing shriveled up to the size of like a dime, when it is usually like 2 inches round.

They have spawned, but no "babies" have settled. I hope you find the secret which has proven quite elusive Xenia are either sturdy like aiptasia or like cut flowers on a hot day, but they don't take tank changes or shipping very well. If this batch does not make it...move your rock with xenia closer to the glass and let them move over there. They are far easier to remove
Guest alex wlazlak October 4, 2005 October 4, 2005 yeah i wasnt sure if seabae's reproduce or what, i was under the intention that theyre like rbta's and just split, but i guess not. thanks. also, about how big should they get?
emissary October 4, 2005 October 4, 2005 Xenia removal should not be handled with a fingernail, ideally. They'll probably survive just fine, but your fingers will smell awful. I suggest piercing the stalk with a toothpick and then cutting below the toothpick with a pair of scissors. Clean cuts in general are better with all softies. Rips make for a harder time healing for the coral. You can also get Xenia off rock by chiseling out under them. Live rock is generally soft enough...
Guest alex wlazlak October 4, 2005 October 4, 2005 im going to try to get some reef-only scisors from my mom cause she works at a doctors office....
emissary October 4, 2005 October 4, 2005 frankly, any scissors work fine. Just make sure to rinse them off well and blot them dry.
Caribbean Jake October 4, 2005 October 4, 2005 If you need some Xenias LMK, I got Pink and Silver Xenias in my tank. I am currently killing with vinegar, although I hesitate to do it or else they keep outgrowing over my SPS, same with Anthelia. On the other hand Anthelia, I can not get rid off and can'tr pull them off as quite simple as Xenias. Jacob
Caribbean Jake October 4, 2005 October 4, 2005 sorry, forgot about Seabae Anemonee. I have one for over a year, It started as a small 2" X 2" anemonee and it has grown to a 4" x 4" size currently hosting two false oscillaris perculias. I never heard of them splitting or reproducing in a captive environment, but that does not mean they can't or there will not be a first. So don't get discourage, keep trying. Jacob
traveller7 October 5, 2005 October 5, 2005 .....also, about how big should they get? 40530[/snapback] Depends on the actual species. Quite a few are sold under the "sebae" common name. Heteractis crispa gets over 18" across the oral disk in captivity. Some pictures of mine in my RC gallery. This is the most common specimen sold as "sebae". Heteractis malu gets over 12" across the oral disk in captivity. Macrodactyla doreensis gets over 16" across the oral disk in captivity. Hope that helps. Edit: one of these days I will proof read before hitting the reply button :bigcry:
