kjamaya December 27, 2012 December 27, 2012 Does anyone know what type of anemone this is. I have never seen one with a yellow base like this.
ToddR December 27, 2012 December 27, 2012 left pic looks like a sebae, the right pic looks like flower nems possibly dyed!!!!!!
smallreef December 27, 2012 December 27, 2012 I was going with flower anemones also..do they keep their foot buried in the sand? Or on a piece of rock?
trockafella December 27, 2012 December 27, 2012 Left pic is definitely a Sebae (H. Crispa) right I agree that is looks like a flower or rock anemone.
Juan Perez December 27, 2012 December 27, 2012 Are these colors hard to come by? In the wild? Yes. That's because they have lost their symbiotic algae and have been dipped in a yellow dye. Under the proper conditions they *MIGHT* return to their natural colors but that isn't guaranteed.
Jan December 27, 2012 December 27, 2012 (edited) Those nems are not dead. they look healthy to me. Sometimes rock flower anemones are intentionally bleached. One of our LFS's had several that were white like this a couple of years ago. The color of the foot is usually the color that will be seen in the anemone once it gets its color back. It's usually the dominent color. I bought one that was intentionally bleached like this. Mine tunred out to be a beautful red and pink. It lasted two years until I sold it. I don't know why they are bleached. It's hard to tell if these nems just dumped their zooxanthellae or if they were intentionally bleached. Edited December 27, 2012 by Jans Natural Reef Foods
Jan December 27, 2012 December 27, 2012 Here's a snippet from a WWM post. "R2: My Bright Yellow Anemone... dyed Heteractis crispa 11/23/08 Just wanted to let you know 3 weeks later and my bright yellow anemone has faded, <<Mmm, not surprising like we discussed>> It still yellow, buy fairly pale at the tips. I'd say its lost 40% of its color. Ironically I bought a pink one just as bright the same day, and within 3 days it was pretty much all white. <<You stated previously that your LFS owner swears he knows the source of these animals and that they are not dyed. It would seem this retailer is indeed trafficking in dyed animals'¦>> It has been white for the last 3 weeks and has bright purple dot on the tip of each tentacle. <<Perhaps you will be lucky and it will recover>> My clowns play in both of them all day long; hopefully this will give them added stimulation. <<It is, but is only adding to the stress of these animals at this point>> Do you think this white with purple tip is now normal, or should it change to brownish? <<White anemones are NOT normal'¦ The animal is bleached as a result of being dyed, and may or may not recover. You need to reduce the stress on these animals, provide optimum water quality and proper feeding for now, and wait>> The faded yellow has no dot on the tips and I was told they are the same species. <<By your own words you were also assured these animals were not dyed by your LFS'¦ Tell me, who do you believe/trust now?>> Thanks again, Trevor <<Regards, EricR>> http://www.wetwebmedia.com/sebaeSelfaqs.htm
