Sharkey18 November 8, 2012 November 8, 2012 I am setting up my new Aqua 40w UV sterilizer and need to purchase a pump. According to what I've read, I want to achieve 30,000 to 45,000 uw/ cm2. Anything higher than that you risk killing all of the good "planktonic food" in the water column. So am I right, that according to the chart, (link below) to achieve 30,000 - 45,000 uw / cm2 I need to achieve a flow rate of 1930 to 2900 gph through the UV unit? That seems extraordinarily high. What pump would you suggest? 40 w Aqua UV
flowerseller November 8, 2012 November 8, 2012 What is the goal of the UV? Clarity? The only thing that could be killed is contained in the water that flows thru the UV. I have run a 40w unit for years pushing about 1500gph and have plenty of life.
Sharkey18 November 8, 2012 Author November 8, 2012 The goal for me is parasite death. Or at least reduction... Chip what pump are you using?
flowerseller November 8, 2012 November 8, 2012 Reeflow Hammerhead 5800gph, but, it also feeds three tanks, a fuge, and my DD skimmer via the UV. All accomplished by creative plumbing.
Jan November 8, 2012 November 8, 2012 (edited) I read the same thing. I was concerned that I'd kill off a lot of good bacteria and pods too. I have a 57 watt UV sterilizer and I'm using a Dart reeflo gold pump which pushes 3800 gph. It's fine. Great flow and as you've seen the water is crystal clear. I have loads of all kinds of pods. Integral9 November 8, 2012 November 8, 2012 (edited) I tried to post the table, but it got reformatted into crud, so here is a link to it that I found that answers your question. http://www.americana....html#flowtable That's not an easy question to answer as it depends on the wattage of the UV, the size of your tank and how much disinfecting you want to do.
