John October 4, 2012 October 4, 2012 Thinking about adding a Fromia Sea Star to the tank... Have you ever kept one? Was it a success/failure?
smallreef October 4, 2012 October 4, 2012 I had one.. but I had the WRONG tank for it... put it in my 12g tank to start with .. it got a bit bigger and I had to put it in my 150g trigger tank... does NOT like any nitrates or phosphates.. literally within days of the move it started to dissintegrate... then I tried to move it back but it didnt get better :(
treesprite October 5, 2012 October 5, 2012 I had one before, very small one which ended up getting buried :( But get a nardoa instead - they supposedly eat asterina stars.
davelin315 October 5, 2012 October 5, 2012 I had one years ago that I collected in Hawaii. Very cool star, absolutely harmless, but it died when my tank parameters got unstable before I moved. They are very sensitive to change and are prone to melting after a few months due to shipping issues.
extreme_tooth_decay October 5, 2012 October 5, 2012 I had them a couple times and liked them. However, they never lasted more than a couple months.
treesprite October 5, 2012 October 5, 2012 If you do get one, get one that has been in captivity for a long time (like a year) so it's already used to a fake environment.
John October 5, 2012 Author October 5, 2012 Agreed, I may just set my desktop background of one and figure out another invert to show off in the tank Thanks everyone!

Marc Weaver October 6, 2012 October 6, 2012 Linckia stars seem to be hardier in my experience. I never had any luck with keeping red fromia alive more than a few weeks, but I have had my blue linckia for almost a year now. I have read that linckia and fromia survival rates past a year and a half or so are not good, though. I have had a few nitrate spikes of around 20ppm too that the linckia has lived through. I did drip acclimate slowly into an acrylic box in the sump for 3 hours. This was to keep the temperature constantly equalized because if the container is not in the sump the water will get cold and will have to be temp acclimated again.
zygote2k October 7, 2012 October 7, 2012 I've had them in several tanks and they all die within 6 months to a year. I believe they have a specific dietary need that we can't provide and they eventually starve to death.
