Curtis Scott August 21, 2012 August 21, 2012 (edited) I'm looking to upgrade my coralife skimmer to a more professional one as I slowly move from a mixed tank (mostly softies) to mostly SPS. I've heard great things about the Avast line of skimmers but I'm confused if I would need to build it out myself from a kit or if I can purchase it fully built? I am also looking at the Super Reef Octopus XP1000 Space Saver (110 Gallon) Internal Cone Protein Skimmer, but I think it is a little pricy, what do you think? http://www.marinedep...IPSISNW-vi.html Can anyone recommend any other great skimmers for a 75g tank with 30g sump and 30g refugium that I should look into? Thanks in advance! Edited August 21, 2012 by Curtis Scott
smallreef August 21, 2012 August 21, 2012 Someone just listed a ASM G1... AWESOME skimmers... easy to find the sweet spot...
TonyInVa August 21, 2012 August 21, 2012 I just upgraded my skimmer to a Otopus Super Reef 2000 Internal Model. I have only had it for several days, and it is still breaking in. I am happy with the quality. The bubble blaster pump is amazingly quiet. This thing is pulling out some amazing skimmate.

My Sedra 3500 pump is easily the loudest thing in my setup.
TonyInVa August 21, 2012 August 21, 2012 The pump is silent. The only noise from the skimmer is the water coming from the outlet.
smallreef August 21, 2012 August 21, 2012 my sedra pumps were never that noisy??? is there something wrong with the impeller?

If you want to save some money, build it yourself, it's not hard to do, and you get a killer skimmer at a great price. I have a CS1 on my 150g tank.
smallreef August 21, 2012 August 21, 2012 is it the pump or is it the vibrations from it sitting on the bottom??? I put my skimmer and pump on a Styrofoam box lid and it really dampens the sound...
Curtis Scott August 22, 2012 Author August 22, 2012 Thank you everyone for the advice! After some additional research, I've decided to save up for a CS1 from Avast. I've decided to go with the fully built option in the link below, with the CS1 Recirculating Kit and smoke colored cone. It will take a little while since it's on backorder, but I think it's worth waiting/saving for. Thanks again! http://www.avastmarine.com/ssc/do/product/CS1
