jaddc August 9, 2012 August 9, 2012 Hey everyone, Wanted to share a vid of my JBJ 28 gallon. The tank is 20 months old. Anyone have an idea for my next Coral? Enjoy! Jeff PS I left my older videos up. Same tank -- just older shots.
jimlin August 9, 2012 August 9, 2012 wow, that is a really nice looking tank. wish i had your aquascaping skills. wonder why your xenias are pulsing? the ones you gave me stopped pulsing after i started using ro water. i tried dosing essential elements and iodide and although they seem to be growing and looks like one of them is about to split, they are not pulsing.
jaddc August 10, 2012 Author August 10, 2012 Thanks Jimmy! Hmmmm... I have read quite a few times that Xenia's mysteriously stop pulsing and no one really knows why. Mine don't pulse all the time -- maybe for about half of the day. As for the aquascaping -- it is a work in progress. I'm constantly messing with it.
jaddc August 10, 2012 Author August 10, 2012 Thanks! It took some time, but the Tanaka Wrasse is finally spending a lot of time out of the rocks! Such a graceful and peaceful fish.
jaddc February 27, 2013 Author February 27, 2013 The mower work pretty good. Would I spend money on it? No. It is made quite cheaply and I'm sure a company like Sprung's Two Little Fishes could do it better. I'm pretty sure it break soon. That said, it chews through algae. I even removed some Xenia and Zoanthids with it. I hook up a hose to the power head and do my water changes with it. You basically drill the surface of the rock to remove the root of whatever you want to get rid of. The power head is sufficient enough to suck up the algae before it spreads in the tank.
Sharkey18 February 27, 2013 February 27, 2013 Wow. Looks amazing. One question. Are you clowns and chromis on speed?
jaddc February 27, 2013 Author February 27, 2013 Wow. Looks amazing. One question. Are you clowns and chromis on speed? Thanks! LOL. Instead of soaking my food in garlic or Selcon, I soak it in blue methamphetamine. what setting do you have your mp 10 at? Well, the latest mod I've done (I should make another vid) is to put an MJ1200 as my return which creates a lot of flow with my sea swirl. Every evening I turn on the MP10 in nutrient export mode at full blast. My schedule is: 1) turn on MP10, 2) turn off return, 3) feed, 4) turn on return after a while, and 5) turn off mp10.
jaddc February 27, 2013 Author February 27, 2013 wow, sounds like your not using your mp 10 that often. That's true. I used to have it on all the time. Since I have it off for most of the day, my LPS have really puffed up nicely.
jaddc June 24, 2013 Author June 24, 2013 (edited) Sorry - I haven't been posting updates that much -- life's been busy and I'm happy to just keep it in good shape. The tank is in cruise control. Just enjoying it without adding new coral or fish. The only loss I had recently was my Target Mandarin who jumped to his death -- which was odd and rare according to the interwebs. I found that I'm getting monster growth in my coral now that I change 15 gallons of water per week (its a 29g JBJ nano). Sounds like a lot, but a WC is easy. And means I can cut back on everything else -- I don't test or dose any more. I change my carbon/GFO mix once a month and trim my chaeto once a month. I'll try to take a new video to show you the growth. J Edited June 24, 2013 by jaddc
jaddc June 24, 2013 Author June 24, 2013 I do, but it is a legacy item since I didn't want to change too much. However, I barely pull any skimmate. That's next on my list to yank off to see if the tank can survive without it.

jaddc June 25, 2013 Author June 25, 2013 I'm going to pull it out this weekend and try to keep everyone informed. :-)
jimlin June 26, 2013 June 26, 2013 I'm going to pull it out this weekend and try to keep everyone informed. :-) sweet. i am still debating on setting up the 24 gallon aquapod, but not sure if we can afford the electricity so very excited to see how your system responds to this. if i do set it up, only plan to run a mj1200 return and the white leds.
jaddc October 6, 2013 Author October 6, 2013 (edited) Hey everyone, An update. I have almost completely stripped my nano's equipment. Details: 29g JBJ Nanocube (effectively 15-20 gallons after displacement) Overflow with filter floss and a bag of 2:1 carbon:GFO (3/4 cup total. changed monthly mostly because the bag gets nasty) Return is a MJ1200 with innovative marine sea swirl Additional flow with MP-10 ATO: tunze ozmolator Temp control: JBJ controller (80 degrees) Lighting: AI sol blue Salinity is set at 35 ppt. Instead of a skimmer, dosers, reactors, etc, I have been changing 15 gallons of water every week (occasionally I miss a week due to life). My biggest observation is that nothing has changed. The coral growth is about the same (not faster nor slower). The fish are still fat and happy. The water is very clear. I had chaeto in the fuge, but I guess that there was not enough nutrients to keep it alive. It didn't realize it died for a while (a drawback of the hard to access sumps of AIOs) and had a mini algae outbreak. Fortunately, the large WCs and weeding took care of that fast. One thing I'm keeping an eye on is my softies (mainly some of the zoanthids and the xenia). They seem to be slowly melting away as my SPS and LPS are thriving. Not terribly surprising since the water is cleaner and others have reported the same thing. Maybe there are some chemical warfare going on that isn't getting removed fast enough. Good thing I didn't buy a $20 polyp of a zoanthid! I'm not sweating it because they were really starting to overgrow and crowd the SPS. I'll probably add SPS where the softies were. Overall I think this is less work (about 1-2 hours total including set up and cleanup) and less expensive. Plus since there is minimal equipment, the look of the entire setup is cleaner. Also, I don't temp match my fresh SW (out of laziness). No ill affects yet even though the temp difference can be as much a 8 degrees. I also haven't tested the water in about a year and the corals don't seem to care. I'll shoot a video soon. As an aside. I'm pruning my red montipora cap quite frequently. As a thank you for reading, if you want a free frag in the future then drop me a PM. I'll hit you up next time I prune. Cheers, Jeff Edited October 6, 2013 by jaddc
jimlin October 8, 2013 October 8, 2013 sweet. i guess nothing beats clean water. how do you clean the detritus from your back chambers?
jaddc October 8, 2013 Author October 8, 2013 When I do a WC, I swish my siphon hose to dislodge the detritus in the back chambers. It works pretty well.
