Lee Stearns November 10, 2003 November 10, 2003 I would like to know if there are folks out there that would like to trade about a cup-pint worth worth of their Live Sand. If several folks each brought a few bags from his own live sand bed then there could be a great cross polination of biodiversity. I'd be willing to meet at a prescribed place with several bags of my sand to swap out, though as a newbe my beds are are probably the least "criter" populated. I am open to time and place if there are any takers. Does a club officer wat to jump on this? Lee
michaelg November 10, 2003 November 10, 2003 Sounds like a great idea. Maybe we can arrange a social at one of the stores thus they know we will be coming....
OUsnakebyte November 10, 2003 November 10, 2003 I'm definitely in. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help out with preparation. Cheers Mike
xeon November 12, 2003 November 12, 2003 Sounds good to me, I'll tag along on the thread although my sand is only a few months old at this point.
Grav November 12, 2003 November 12, 2003 I was just thinking how cool it would be if 7 or 8 people all traded 7 or 8 small bags of LS. I would make this kind of trade anytime, with one person or a group. I live in Fairfax, work in Tysons corner and have a tank in each place. Now that I think of it... I should trade with myself!!
Lee Stearns November 12, 2003 Author November 12, 2003 Looks like five of us so far-that is four bags each. I am game. Suggestions on time and place? I thought the idea about meeting at a vendor was good. They might even chip in a small bag for each of us from their own LS to get us paying customers to visit the shop. Marine Scene? Rootzens?
michaelg November 12, 2003 November 12, 2003 personally, I'd opt for the reef tank. I can't make it this weekend though as I will be out of town. If you guys want to go ahead- fully understandable.
Lee Stearns November 12, 2003 Author November 12, 2003 Reef Tank works for me, very near by, but thought it might be difficult for others to get to. How is the following weekend- I'd like to meet the pres at this swap. Lee
Grav November 12, 2003 November 12, 2003 This weekend isn't great for me either. Next weekend at TRT would be great. I'm flexable on time, but Saturday is usually better. 2:00?
Guest Kimo November 12, 2003 November 12, 2003 I'd be into that as well - Just let me know when and I'll be there with some sand. Jamie
OUsnakebyte November 12, 2003 November 12, 2003 Well, I'm not available after 11:00 am on Saturday the 22nd (it's my b-day, and the girlfriend has something planned). I could probably do Sunday anytime. Where is the Reef Tank? I can probably Flexcar there, couldn't I? Sorry to be such a problem. :( Mike
Grav November 13, 2003 November 13, 2003 Earlier on Sat would be fine too... I was just tossing out a time to get something started. I dunno what a flex car is, but if TRT is in Fairfax. Not far, but if you have never been there, it is a little weird to find. I also have another batch of pink branching Xenia mounted to rubble if anyone wants it. I'd trade it for ANYTHING, including a diffrent KIND of Xenia. Phil
Lee Stearns November 13, 2003 Author November 13, 2003 pink branching Xenia- I love to put a small piece in my Nano- I have a a couple of zoo's that I am trying to get to spread to another rock- It would be small but they might be there by the 22nd. You are right, the directions to the reef tank are tough-though they are on the web site. I'd be happy to give a ride back to the springfield metro to anyone that needs it. Looks like a consensus is building for 10:00 22 Nov, or better Sunday afternoon at the reef tank. I'll be there unless my son's Hampden-Sydney college football team gets invited to the playoffs, which would be a saturday game.
Lee Stearns November 19, 2003 Author November 19, 2003 OK I guess we had better get this going- by the way the reef tank is not open Sturday AM. I will make a command decision since I started this thread and say 2PM Sunday the 22nd of November at the Reef Tank in N Va. Again my sand is relatively young but I will bring 4 bags to trade unless more folks jump on he band wagon. See you there- I will let the Reef Tank know we are coming. Regards, Lee
OUsnakebyte November 19, 2003 November 19, 2003 I assume you mean Sunday the 23rd at 2:00 pm, right? If so, that's great for me. How many bags of sand is each person bringing? What size? I was thinking of just getting some small ziplock sandwich bags and filling them. I can get the directions to TRT from their website, right? Mike
Lee Stearns November 20, 2003 Author November 20, 2003 sorry you got me! 23 Nov Sunday 2PM at the Reef Tank. Directions on line at: http://www.reefstore.com/
Grav November 20, 2003 November 20, 2003 I'm in. My sand has loads of life, but the tank is small so there isn't a whole lot to pull out. I'm planning to put about a half cup each into ziplock bags. I'll also bring the Xenia for whoever wants. I count 5 of us, so 4 bags each unless someone else jumps in.
Lee Stearns November 20, 2003 Author November 20, 2003 Actually you may be doing yourself a favor by changing out some of the LS. I am beginning to be a proponent of the theory that the sand and LR act as a sump to take out Phosphates and various other elements. They reach saturation like a sponge at the + or - 3 year year mark in most well run systems. By replacing the sand which is easiest or moving the phospate staturated LR to a system that has almost no phosphate the sponge leaches out the phosphate to the system where it can be used by plant material and removed. According to more competent sourses than myself the phosphate and nutrient levels at the surface of these materials are considerably higher than in the water column where we take our readings. Any way I would be glad to get some criter loaded sand- I will bring four baggies myself and am looking forward to getting a little peice of the pink Xenia. Regards, Lee
xeon November 22, 2003 November 22, 2003 As far as directions off of 66 you want to get on the Fairfax County Parkway which is VA-7100. If your traveling on 66 towards Manassas you want to go left of 66, from Manassas you want to go to the right. Basically you don't want to go towards Herndon. After going down the Parkway a bit (not very long) you will want to get off onto the Braddock road exit. Take a left onto Braddock and go like 2 miles until you come to Ox Road. Take a right on Ox Road. The next stoplight I believe is Zion, you want to take a left here. There is a Exxon on the left hand corner of the intersection. Continue on Zion... you will run into a T. Breath deep your almost there. Take a left on Guinea (the road at the T) and the road in short order will have a turning land sprout off to the right... this is where you turn right onto Sandy Lewis. Sandy Lewis drive doesn't look like a road... more like an entrance way to a large warehouse building with misc. businesses. Once on Sandy Lewis, take a short left and go around the building on the right side and the reef tank entrance is by the first cut back into the building by a truck loading gate.
xeon November 22, 2003 November 22, 2003 Grav, I'd also like some of the xenias you mentioned. I have a small sinulara (sp?) leather that I could bring if you like. My tank is pretty coral deficient right now. So it looks like four people at 2PM at TRT.
Grav November 22, 2003 November 22, 2003 Xeon, You are on. I have 4 mounted and will bring them all. Lee wants some, but unless someone else makes a last second request, I can give each of you two. Phil
Guest Kimo November 24, 2003 November 24, 2003 Sorry I didn't make it guys - Had some personal business come up. Jamie
xeon November 24, 2003 November 24, 2003 Lee, Mike and Phil... it was good meeting you all. Lee your tank and proposed setup look great, thank you again for the SPS. Phil the xenia's are in their new home and look really good. Some frags, a little new "biodiversity", some marine talk.... I'd call that a pretty good afternoon. The evening *Redskins loss* is another story. LOL
Lee Stearns November 24, 2003 Author November 24, 2003 I thought it was great too- Got a lot done between the Macro encrusted and huge amount of critters on the live rock form the Pres and the live sand trade-and getting to meet some other members face to face- to get nagging little questions asked and responded too. Seeing many of the criters and marine fauna up close with some one to exchange exerience with was very helpful. Thanks Grav and Xeno for getting the Tank in place. Grav my little pink Xena frag I do not believe will make it. Will have some type of event at the house about a year form now to see how far it has come. Will have to get the picture bug-and start at about Christmas time getting photos out electronically. I happen to know Santa is bringing a digital camera. :D Lee
Grav November 24, 2003 November 24, 2003 All, Yea great time. Lee, Thanks for the 55g & Stand! You the Man! I've seen them go through a lot, just cutting em off and attaching em to rock is a litte tramatic... look terrible for days. Give it a chance, but toss it into your nano at work for now. I don't think you have enought light in that temp tank you have at home. If it doesn't work, (or even it is does) I'll have Xeina, and some softies for you by x-mas. Phil
