Oceanic6 July 5, 2012 July 5, 2012 I noticed that a small part of my Maxima Clam's mantle has been bent in the past couple of days. The rest of the mantle is always open and looking healthy. Could it be early signs of Pinched Mantle? Should I wait to see if it improves or should I do a freshwater dip now while the clam is healthy and strong? Has anyone ever done a freshwater dip before? Do you just dip the clam in RO/DI water and match the temperature in the DT? I am nervous about doing this. I can't understand how a saltwater animal could survive a freshwater dip for 20 mins, some have dipped it longer.
Oceanic6 July 6, 2012 Author July 6, 2012 Anyone? I guess no one has any input on this. Update: I took some RO/DI water and added Marine Buffer until it matched the Ph in my tank. I also left the container floating in the tank to match the temperature. I was all ready to go, but then I wasn't able to remove the clam. It's currently anchored down and I wasn't able to gently wiggle it free, so no dip tonight. I will try later. If it doesn't work, I guess it's on it's own.
Jan July 6, 2012 July 6, 2012 A fresh water dip exactly how you described it, though drastic, has helped when I had clams. It's amazing how happy they get after a FW dip. Be careful not to rip it's byssal gland by tugging on it or it will die. You can take a razor and get as close to the attachment on the rock as possible and cut the byssal fillaments. They will grow back. The cut has to be as far away from the clam as possible and as close as possible to the attachment on the rock. You may have to dip the entire rock, if it isn't too big. Take a look at pictures and the anatomy of aclam before you do this. Only do i if you are comfortable. sometimes pinched mantle corrects itself with water changes.
zygote2k July 6, 2012 July 6, 2012 you might just try leaving it alone and see what happens. cutting the byssal threads then doing a freshwater dip may just kill it.
