icecool2 July 2, 2012 July 2, 2012 Do you remove your frags from the plug or mounting disc before you put them in your scape? I tend to do both. For zoas, I leave them on the disc, for SPS, if I can get it off and it isn't encrusted, I pull it off and epoxy it in.
treesprite July 2, 2012 July 2, 2012 I do both depending on what it is, how encrusted it is, and where I want to put it. When it comes to fresh frags, I'd prefer that they not be put on frag plugs.
Chad July 2, 2012 July 2, 2012 I'm with you, Adam. I almost always remove the frag frm the plug unless it's zoas or I am putting it in the frag tank. To me the plugs are akin to being in the hospital. I really just want it to get better so I can get it out and make it better!! (plus they are ugly)
ToddR July 3, 2012 July 3, 2012 I take them off the plug. If I frag stuff I mount it to a shell or small piece of coral.
icecool2 July 3, 2012 Author July 3, 2012 When I frag things myself I usually attach them to a piece of rubble rock. They don't stay on my frag rack as easily, but it is a lot nicer for whoever is getting them. So the next logical question... how do you remove frags that are encrusted? I have a few digi frags that I was to mount to the rockwork now that they've grown, but they're encrusted. Should I just cut it off with a cutting wheel and let it grow back out on the disc?
Der ABT July 3, 2012 July 3, 2012 i say always remove frag plugs....they are basically a great place for hitchhikers to congregate...algea, snails, pests, you name it. if a frag is encrusted i either snap it off and chalk up a little loss, or i cut the plug up.. cut the stem off and then try to cut all around the encrusted part, then seal off all of the left over plug with glue and glue it onto a new plug or onto rubble. people say frag plugs are ugly. yes they can be but they are also very useful when finding where a coral is happy height wise/flow wise etc...and if yuo dont like the look you can always find where they are happy and then glue them after. if you can plan ahead and drill your rock for frag plugs, then the plug goes right into the rock so you only see the top of it, eventually the coral grows over the frag plug and you dont even know its there, many are amazed when i pull a colony off the rock to frag it and go how.... granted you cant plan for all corals (well i cant cause i have a new frag addiction) but you can plan for some main ones... if people dont want frag plugs...PLEASE tell the person you a buying frags from so they dont waste their plugs... thats my 48 cents.
