I've got a stylophora atop a round rock that appears to have a few aptasia and majano on it. Been in my tank for almost a year now and neither the majano or aptasia have spread to adjacent rocks. I'm thinking I might as well just kill them now. Since it's on an easily movable piece of rock, what would you suggest?

Would it work to take the rock out and place it in a dish filled with kalkwasser so that the rock is submerged and the coral is exposed? How will the coral hold up to this? Do I need to be spraying it with saltwater while I'm doing this? How long to kill the beasts? 10 mins? 15 mins? 30 mins? Should I use vinegar instead of kalkwasser? Other thoughts?

i have had decent success with joes juice and that way you dont have to remove the rock

Why not just use kalk injection? Always worked for me. Sometimes smearing the paste lets them come back.

I've tried injecting. That seems to let them come back too.

Once or twice I miss the center of the anemone and it does come back. I find that if I use a larger bore syringe and really pump a good amount right in the middle when the aiptasia is open (sneak up on it before it shrinks back in), they don't have a chance. Let me know if you have problems obtaining these, I work in medicine and can get them pretty easily (so long as you can prove you're not a heroin addict... J/K)

They say that with Joe's Juice you just have to inject close to the mouth to kill them. I just ordered some so I'll let you know if it works.

Hm... I just traded a bunch of frags for a pair of itty syringes. Maybe I should use bigger ones then. Also I've been injecting into the stalk. I should inject the center of the "mouth?" I guess I am interested in the larger syringes if you've got some available. You want some xenia? :)

Don't know what the law is here, but be careful about having syringes. I know that in Illinois I used to prosecute people for possession of syringes (hypodermic needles only) as they were considered to be drug paraphernalia. That said, you can always use a turkey injector with a needle. It doesn't need to be very small and the turkey injector needle is probably a good size for allowing kalk paste to go through.

Syringes are no problem. I have plenty of really large ones (60ml) available if you need them. Needles are regulated in some jurisdictions, but these will take a piece of airline tubing on the end and you can put anything you want on that.

PS:

Basters and soft tips are OK, but unfortunately do not penetrate the body of the anemone, which produces maximal killing power, often allowing them to take hold again.

When I had them, I injected them with microwave hot water and kalk.

I stuck the shot down the mouth and then gave it a face full as it pulled out

from the needle.

In the process of moving livestock over to my 90g I had to get rid of a lot of majano. I took each piece, large bowl, water, small flathead screwdriver and nice days on the deck.

I eased the flat tip of the screwdriver under each majano and wiggled it under and pop off come the majano. Not a method for the aptasia though.

I did this for each piece over a period of a three days to make sure I got all. After about 7 pieces with 10-20 on each only one made it over to the new tank, which I promptly got out. This was three month ago and nothing since.

BTW, if you try this, don't leave the scewdriver out and not clean it. Did this one night and the saltwater and metal created a nice rustic look to the tool :o
