Fishie July 1, 2012 July 1, 2012 Turned on a new generator this evening only to find everything dead Melanarus wrasse Pbt Kole tang Yellow tang Fairy wrasse 2 cleaner shrimp Idk more but I am just too bummed out to type more Have half a mind to pack out of the hobby Had some of these for years
MBVette July 1, 2012 July 1, 2012 I'm in the same boat, so I completely know how you feel. It's going to be hard but it gives us a chance to fix things that we wouldn't/couldn't have done with the fish in the tank
icecool2 July 1, 2012 July 1, 2012 I'm really sorry Fishie. This is one of those times where it is hard to see out of. Wait until the power is on, get everything back in order ad give it a little while. You'll come back around and you can slowly rebuild. Think of it as a reboot rather than a loss.
Fishie July 1, 2012 Author July 1, 2012 Turned the lights up and many coral look dead too Will see how it goes
Fishie July 1, 2012 Author July 1, 2012 My temp were at about 75 So did everything die because of no oxygen I didnt think that would be the cause ... If I had only checked ... That jut makes me feel a lot worse
smallreef July 1, 2012 July 1, 2012 Yeah most likely no oxygen or the waste built up in the water to fast....do you have an auto feeder? If that fed right before and during the power outage it can foul a tank without filtration very quickly....
Jan July 1, 2012 July 1, 2012 (edited) I'm so sorry to hear. Hang in there! This was nothing you did. Take a deep breath. Clean it up and take some time to think about it all. Don't throw in the towel just yet. Edited July 1, 2012 by Jan
Fishie July 1, 2012 Author July 1, 2012 Yes pellets on an auto feeder But I saw the fish puffed up or with their mouths open and at the bottom Makes me think oxygen... I saw them swimming around at 6pm And I finally got a generator hooked up by 11pm I didn't see in between ... I have 4 clowns that survived and looks like most o the Lps and zoas are ok All the snails seem fine The Sps looks bad and bleached... But I'll leave it in incase they decide to recover Just so darn bummed about maybe something as simple as churning water could have saved the few fish who were so happy and healthy Ignorant p#*!k
smallreef July 1, 2012 July 1, 2012 Unfortunently and especially with the storm friday night, none of us saw it coming...literally. If we all knew and had planned well we would have been okay, the problem is is that this is an isolated event. Now we all know for the future, i am sorry for your losses, but that would havehappened to any of us being that it was NOT safe to drive during or right after the storm.
Fishie July 1, 2012 Author July 1, 2012 It's the Emotional element that's bad ... Being responsible for ur pets The wrasse I've had for 6 years probably among my first few fish
Omair July 1, 2012 July 1, 2012 Thx for the support... Sry but I just need to vent Fishie, I'm really sorry to hear about your loss. You have such a beutiful setup - please don't quit!
taiscici July 1, 2012 July 1, 2012 I think it's oxygen especially if your tank is in the basement. Sorry for your lost. My clowns and flame angel almost didn"t make it yesterday.
davidm July 1, 2012 July 1, 2012 I know how you feel, and I'm sorry for your losses. I too had many thoughts during this outage about giving up, and quite homestly still do. The problem with this metro area is that this happens way too often. I would say 2-3 times a year at my house, if not from wind storms during the summer then it's snow and ice pulling down those 1950s era overhead power lines in the winter. I understand your frustration. My thoughts going forward are to keep it simple - and for me that means no $100 corals, simple softies and easy SPS, and I have to accept I need to wake up every 4 hrs, and deal with the stress both for myself and my family, to do shifts with a car converter power supply to run a powerhead for circulation. We all love the hobby, but each of us have different thresholds for when enough is enough - I would suggest you give yourself time to think it through and remember what you enjoy most about your reef, and as someone else said, think of this a reboot - david
smallreef July 1, 2012 July 1, 2012 Also consider a UPS...then you wouldent need the converter from the car if it is charged...im going to add one for my main pump and some baattery backup airstons in the tank just in case...
