I bought the most colorful (imo) wrasse, last thursday from LFS.... It was in good shape, there were two to choose from and this one seemed more outgoing and ate while I was there.... even though it was a new addtition to their stock....

anyhow, did my usual tank conditioning with a very slow water change after I had acclimated the fish to the tank temps....

when I released it into my tank, it seemed to dive to one front corner,,, a little aggitated, so I cut lights and left it alone for a while thinking it would settle down...

This is the last I saw of it.....

I have fed at different times of day the past couple days now, to see if it was shy and had gone to hiding.... No such luck no sighting..

used a small led flashlight and scoured the rock crevices from outside the tank, and still couldn't find him.. checked the overflow, nothing.....

I only have four other fish in the tank, a small 6 line wrasse (2"), a flame hawkfish (2-3"), a yellow watchman goby (2"), and a flame tail blenny (small 2" or so).....

they are all pretty peaceful fish, and I don't have any large corals and only one small rbt anenome....(actually just got that the other day)

couple pepermint shrimp, one red shrimp and 2 cleaners...

Is it common for some of these fish to go into hiding for this long? Even when I'm feeding??

I am kicking myself for not watching it more closely when I put it in, but wanted him to settle down, so I really don't know where he went..

by the way, I have a 20" wooden top on my tank so not too likely that he could have jumped...

any ideas or coments would be greatful....

I am not going to tear my tank apart, but as he cost a bit, I sure want to have some sort of resolution to this dilema....

thanks

david

I just got a McCosker's the other day and he immediately wedged himself into a rock crevice upon being released into the tank. He stayed there for about 36 hours and is not swimming around exploring the tank. He still darts back into the rock crevice if I walk up to the tank quickly. I wouldn't start to worry for another couple of days.

Thanks guys...... makes me feel a little better........

I had been told (by LFS's) that they hide, but then I read a thread somewhere where someones new addition, just vanished..... never to be seen again... I just need to be patient...

what the heck anyhow........ i thought he would be tapping on the front of the tank waiting to be fed.......................:o) :o)

I've had it both ways. First leopard wrasse I ever put in my previous tank instantly went under the sand never to be seen again, second try fish was swimming around happy as could be in the morning, went to BRK, when I got back the wrasse was on the floor jumped out. Third try with a larger tank, and screen tops, leopard wrasse has been in there about 6 months, always out and about swimming around.

The six line is not always a friendly fish despite appearances. That said, the leopard wrasses will bury themselves in the sand to hide so it's definitely a possibility. I'd feed some enticing foods and see if it pops out (something live may motivate it to come out to eat). I put one in before and it went right over the overflow and I never saw it again.

My Melanurus wrasse has an early bedtime, about an hour before the lights go out he hits the sand bed.

On my last tank I bought the most gorgeous looking leop. wrasse from F&F. I saw him once and that was when I put him in the tank. Never saw him again. Even when I sold everything and broke down the tank a few months later. And this happens ALOT with these fish! Good luck
