Anemone sensitivity - Chemi-Pure Elite or Purigen safe? Extra filtration needed?

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone,

About a month or so ago, I combined my 54G corner reef and my 90G reef in my new 180G reef. Everything has been doing great so far; however, I'm starting to notice early signs of extra nutrients (BUT everything is looking great - full coral polyp and RBTA extensions). I have cheato in my sump that has been growing steadily. My tanks are dominated by soft corals (leathers, ricordia, zoanthids, and mushrooms) and monti caps. I also have a large RBTA in the reef.

I used to use Chemi-Pure elite in my 54G with no problem. The 54G was skimmerless since the extra nutrients seems to make the softies flourish. I'm wondering if I can use Chemi-Pure and/or purigen in my new 180 (the anemone was in my 90, and I never tried Chemi-pure with it). How sensitive are anemone to water quality and Chemi-Pure Elite or Purigen?

Also, I'm wondering if I should invest in a phosphate reactor and/or skimmer.

Thanks,

Matt

What is a "sign" of extra nutrients?

Skimmers are good things.

PO4 reactors with media like Phos Extract and GFO are good things.

Chemi-pure / Elite are good things

Having a Refugium is a very good thing.

I used both and it didn't bother my anemone. But with the constant replacing of chemi it saved me money to get a reactor.
