Stop using the ocean water unless you are able to get well out to see and collect it well below the surface. The water on the surface and the shore can be highly polluted. Der ABT January 24, 2011 Share January 24, 2011 you can also go to the store and buy deionized water from the store for anywhere from 35-50cents a gallon. it is filtered more then tap water so it just helps a little. ive just never actually seen a saltwater tank that has a top, im sure there out there but ive not seen it. the surface area in your sump is not that large and yes the overflow does add some 02 but ive had an open tank on all of mine and only had 2 fish jump before i had the mesh screening up. i have built what is called a hood (bascially an enclosure to house the light on top of the tank ) but it is open in the back with fans to help circulate air, that means that the fish could only get out the back (where i have screen up) i think most people are just trying to share what we have had work for us.
