I've cured a lot of dry rock and have it 90% covered with pink coralline. I'm thinking about curing and selling it to offset the costs of the hobby. Anyone every try this? Dry rock online is at least $2 a pound but with lighting, RO water, salt, etc, I wonder how profitable it could be. Anybody tried this?

Rock doesn't seem to command the price that it did just a few years ago. I routinely see sales of $2/lb for live rock, so I don't think there's much to be made from other hobbyists looking for a deal.

If you are serious, I would run through all the things that you would need to do it (costs for one-time equipment, ongoing supplies, space, electricity, time, etc.), and figure out what you would need to sell it for to make a profit. Compare this price to general market price and then decide for yourself if it is worth it. At a glance, I could not tell you one way or another.

GARF was doing it with their aragocrete rocks but their initial costs were less because they were making the rocks in-house and not shipping them in. I agree with beatle and the hard part would being able to sell it at a profit to cover the expenses.

Don't forget you'll need to keep constant temp, good flow and a good skimmer too. It's just not profitable unless you're trying to sell it for $6-$10 per lb.

I'm thinking I could get $6 or more if it is covered with coralline. I see so much LR at the LFSs that barely has any coralline.

Say you get $6, which I do not think you would. How many pounds would you sell a month? I think the problem would be running all the required equipment and only selling less than a couple hundred pounds a month (probably much less).

Dr Macs sells rock for $7. I don't see the $1 incentive to purchase from an individual rather than a legit store.
