Skimmer

I got a really good deal on this skimmer. It was a deal i could not pass up. It is a exact replica of the E.T.S.S. 1800. It will handle 800 to 900 gal.. I did a little research on the E.T.S.S. before purchasing this one. Has anyone used downdraft skimmers, if so how did you like it. This one has 4 down drafts, it will be running off of the Tiger Shark manifold so i can give it plenty of flow. here is a couple of pics. I still need to give it a vinegar bath.

Nice ......Make sure you keep the water level 2 inches below the box.

They can take a couple of days to breakend then then go crazy.

NEW BIO-BALLS are better i replace them every six months.

Your orp may get to 400plus with it.....

A ETSS downdraft or beckett are the top removers of toc/doc so you have the

best skimmer there is to me.

check out sanjays beckett downdraft vs a bubbleking.

The cones all were poor performers but people still for the most part

cling to the idea that they are better.

This study is the only comparision that checked toc/doc while most people think bubble size is how you measure a good skimmer.

I dont know a lot about ORP. Is 400 a good thing?

basically, absolute orp isn't that important. relative orp (how yours fluctuates) can be a good sign of the level of dissolved organics in your system. when i used to monitor orp, i would have a drop if a fish or coral died. the downdrafts are very, very good at getting everything out of the water column. they are great skimmers. just a little loud, big, and require a big pump.

here's an old reefs.org talk on orp that should help explain some of the concepts.

Theres a reason natural reefs have orp over 400 and when you run large skimmers on even small

systems you will get orp near or over 400 which is always a good thing.

If you overdrive a etss then the age of your bio-balls dosent matter but anything less and it

can effect your performance.

YOU FIGURE atleast 800 gal hr thru a single tower up to 1200 so depending on your pump

you may want to use less then the 4 towers .

Even running 1 tower will work great if your run around a 1000 gal hr.

You can order them from ETSS AS THERE ARE DIFFERENT TYPES AROUND.

If you have a SPS reef thats full to the rim with corals and you have low orp it will not be long before

your tank crashes.Orp around 300 is what so many people have and as there tank matures its falls to the mid 200

then all the bad things can start to happen which we read about on these boards.
