 Hey all, I am considering building my own base rock.

Few questions:

-Has anyone in the club actually been successful with building your own base rock?

-What are your suggestion?

-How were you successful?

-What are some pitfalls to steer away from?

-Is it as easy as it looks on the internet?

Thanks

We did a demo of it at a fragfest a couple years back. Paul_b spoke at the last meeting and he has also made his own rock. Portland cement and crushed coral.

I've been doing it for about ten years, very easy, and it is a great family project. GARF.org has some great informational videos. Most of the rock in one of my tanks is rock that I made.

The rocks I build have a PVC pipe skeleton wrapped in window screen and coated with Sakrete Mortor Mix. The top picture is under construction the bottom is completed and was in my tank. That piece is 3' long.

very cool seems like an interesting idea. probably really cheap from home depot to buy whats needed

Sakrete Mortor mix, a very small bag. A stick of 1/2" PVC. electrical PVC is better becaise it's gray and some plastic window screen. Oh yeah, a glue gun to stick the screen on

Thank you all for your replies! I am going to give it a try in about 2 weeks and I'll take pictures and post...

I have a rubbermaid tub full of sand/CC mix. I even have some portland if you want it. I had it listed in the for free section a few weeks ago but the individual never showed up.

well you better know where all that stuff at Home Depot is cause you will not get a single person in that store to help you, thats for sure.

SO my gf challenged me today she wants an all black fish tank....including black rock do we have any ideas? Can it even be done!.... I'm going to look online!
