sen5241b April 6, 2010 April 6, 2010 I need a simple one or two outlet power strip with a digital timer to run a dosing pump. Got a suggestion? Coralife has a power strip with digitally timed outlets for $35 but I'm not sure I like the way it works. It has 8 outlets, 4 always on, 2 on in day time and 2 on only when daytime outlets are off. Maybe put the dosing pump and ATO on opposite timed outlets?
luceneck April 6, 2010 April 6, 2010 Go with the individual timers, those Coralife power centers do not have a good reputation (at least the old models): http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=584645&perpage=25&pagenumber=1 http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=580767

I once had a glass heater break and did not realize it for a day or so. The power strip starting melting. As I was getting ready to leave for the weekend I smelt something burning. You could argue that the power strips only prevent power surges but I really would have expected a safer and better product. $147 just to time a dosing pump is way too much. onux20 April 6, 2010 April 6, 2010 I really like these. I have two of these plugged in to one power strip. They have two inputs, but you cant operate independently. Not what you asked for but I think a better choice than the coralife. Ron
trockafella April 6, 2010 April 6, 2010 (edited) I know eople like to bash the coralifes, but ive had 2 for over 3 years continuous use and never a problem... I also try and make sure I have drip loops, which some of those people with fires may not have had.. Its always easier to blame someone ( or a company) than blame yourself.. I also use the heavy duty digital timer from lowes, its like $20, has to plug inputs and can handle a descent load.. Edited April 6, 2010 by trockafella
El Camaron April 6, 2010 April 6, 2010 home sepot sells them from 7 to 16 bucks depending if one or two outlest to it and they work great.
sen5241b April 6, 2010 Author April 6, 2010 I need one with a battery backup. What happens if the power goes off for just a few minutes? Does the thing then turn your pump on 27/7? Or turn it off completely?
trockafella April 6, 2010 April 6, 2010 The heavy duty one has a battery back up, and so does the digital coralife.. I think most of the digital ones have a battery back up..
Charlie April 6, 2010 April 6, 2010 If you used something like this: http://www.lowes.com/pd_144082-207-TM12DOLBL_4294858445_4294937087?productId=3125291&pl=1¤tURL=/pl_Timers_4294858445_4294937087_?rpp=30 The problem of the pump being stuck on would be gone (if the power's out, your pump wouldn't come on anyway) and since it's mechanical, you wouldn't loose your programming, you'd just have to turn the when to restet the time.
El Camaron April 6, 2010 April 6, 2010 this is the ones i use, got it a few weeks ago to try out and its great. For the daylights i will be using the digital one so ican have days off. http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1vZ1xh7/R-100685854/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053 http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1vZ1xh7/R-100685884/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053
Charlie April 6, 2010 April 6, 2010 That's the kind that I was thinking of, except that the one at Lowe's has a cord making it easier to plug into a powerbar. Since the set times are machanical (tabs are pulled out for on-time and off-time), the device wouldn't loose it's programming, it's just the time would have to be reset. I've used these for quite a while for other applications, such as a warming lamp for baby chickens or a grow light.
onux20 April 7, 2010 April 7, 2010 I really like these. I have two of these plugged in to one power strip. They have two inputs, but you cant operate independently. Not what you asked for but I think a better choice than the coralife. Ron The ones I use have a battery back-up and keeps your program times in case of a power failure. Ron
sen5241b April 7, 2010 Author April 7, 2010 (edited) The mechanical ones will not be good for precise dosing. I need the ability to turn the dosing pump on for precise periods down to the minute. Edited April 7, 2010 by sen5241b
