treesprite March 27, 2010 March 27, 2010 I was very skeptical about this stuff until today when I actually tried it out. This stuff is amazing! It's comes as a roll of wood "tape" about 1/2" wide, is this, bends easily & breaks rather easily while in this pre-applied state. It is supposed to be ironed on like ironing a patch on blue jeans, with a clothes iron. According to the package, it can be sanded. Sounds too good to be true, but I decided to give it a try anyway because I couldn't find an appropriate molding to cover the edges of the plywood I used to top my tank stand. Well, it is definitely true! This stuff gives only about 30 seconds to adjust it before it becomes so well adhered that it's impossible to adjust position. It hardens after heat is applied, to trying to trim the lower edge was very fifficult, so I decided to just try sanding the edges. It sands so well that when I run my finger over the edge of the wood top, I can't even tell the veneer is there - it blends perfectly into the piece of wood, as if it IS a part of the wood. The only issue I have with it, is that it can't be bended around corners, so I had to put the tape and make the fromt, sides, and back of the stand into all separate strips which makes the corners stupid looking. I used wood glue to fill in at the corners to make the ends of pieces fit in togethr smoothly, then tomorrow I'll sand down again to smooth the corners out better. If anyone else is going to use plywood where the edges of the plywood will show, I strongly recommend giving this stuff a try!
lanman March 27, 2010 March 27, 2010 I reckon if you cut the corners on 45-degree angles with a box cutter, the corners would be reasonably neat after a light sanding. Sound like a good idea for covering plywood edges. And I do have some edges that need covering. Home Depot? bob
Coral Hind March 27, 2010 March 27, 2010 I have been using it for years with no issues. Two of my tank stand doors are simple plywood with this banding around them. It helps to soak the stuff a little or use the steam from the iron to soften it first before wrapping it around the corners.
treesprite March 28, 2010 Author March 28, 2010 I can't remember if I got it at Home Depot or Lowes. I have been using it for years with no issues. Two of my tank stand doors are simple plywood with this banding around them. It helps to soak the stuff a little or use the steam from the iron to soften it first before wrapping it around the corners. That's a good tip, thanks. I was afraid the steam would cause some kind of damage, so I had emptied all the water out of the iron before using it - next time I'll do differently.
hbh March 28, 2010 March 28, 2010 Both places sell it. Another thought would be to see if the veneer for counters matchies what you need as is will have the L shape. And yes it is only 30 seconds to adjust a fact i forgot yesterday when I did the ends of my countertops! BUT a little matching silicone will hide the minor 1 mm slip.
