Tank Photography Advice

I have a decent DSLR setup (Canon 40D with Speedlite 580EX II, BG E2N battery grip, 28-135 IS Canon lens, and 70-300 IS canon lens). I can take decent pics with this but not of my tank to save my life. I need help figuring out the settings and conditions that work best (camera settings, tank lights on, flash on/off, background room lights on/off, etc...). I don't have a macro lens at the moment but am hoping I can work with what I have.
