Reef ready vs not reef ready.

Anyone able to offer any pros and cons? I will be upgrading in the next couple of weeks. The biggest issue I have so far is that I like to have a blue backround. If I go with reef ready I will have the black running top to bottom and not able to have the entire back blue. Anyone know of a fix for this. I would also like to hear your pros and cons.

I have a non-reef ready and I just bought a 125 that im going to drill and make reef ready. I like running a sump, since i can hide the heater and the skimmer from the main display, but don't like my HOB overflow box. As for having the blue background with the black overflows, i really don't think it will make that much of a difference. Plus if you do a glass holes overflow, its small enough to be hidden.

My preference is a black background over blue. I think the black background makes the colors look so much better, especially when you keep the back glass clean and scrape off all the coralline algae.

But in the end, its all what you want.

I have two 120 gallon tanks. One is RR and the other I just drilled myself. I hate the reef ready because the built in overflows take up so much room. I suggest a non reef ready and just drill it and install your own overflow box. Here is a link to my DIY overflow that worked great and there are several people on RC using it now. http://www.wamas.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=28815

are you still doing a 110? or did you change your mind on that...

I second the glassholes.com overflows. They really don't take up much room at all and still provide good flow. Also, I think that their surface skimming is a lot better than the AGA overflows.

That's what I did. I am so much happier with the Calfo-style overflow, rather than the ugly, bulky Megaflow. Glassholes looks good as well.

I got a 215g and much prefer the non RR. I had a 120 RR and just thought the overflows took up too much room. I got an Eshopps overflow and that has been working very well for me.

I drilled my 120. My only complaint is the noise from the overflow. Take a look/listen to a few setups to see how they quieted the overflow before you make a final decision.

I have a 1.5in drill bit if you want to borrow and/or want some help.

I'm with Dave (Mogurnda), after all the issues I have with u-tube overflow boxes, drill the back, rig a durso and run. If I was brave enough to drill my tank in place I'd be doing it... but I'm not that brave. When I switch to the 4' 150g it's goin to be drilled and set up prior to putting it in place.

I had a Calfo coast-to-coast overflow and would gladly do it again. I will be putting my 150 build together this weekend. If you want to stop by I will give you lots of leftover pieces and more advice than you can stand.
