NamReefs October 16, 2009 October 16, 2009 Hi everyone! I like to purcharge a purple tang but just make sure is alright to have him together with my tang? Anyone know how is purple tang assgessive? Please give some idea.
scott711 October 16, 2009 October 16, 2009 what is your other tang? Tangs of the same species can be aggressive towards each other, but generally can be put together in a larger aquarium. What size tank do you have?
Brian Ward October 16, 2009 October 16, 2009 The purple is generally more aggressive than a yellow, kole, or blue hippo, but I would say a bit less aggressive than most of the acanthurus species - especially those out of the red sea. Mine is a model citizen - he's been able to defend himself from my much larger (and previously established) dejardini sailfin and they have an understanding now and coexist more or less peacefully. There's a lot of conditions on whether introducing the tang would be a problem. Remember that tangs in general are more aggressive than a lot of other species and should be introduced last. Also, they require a lot of space - I wouldn't put any tang in a tank smaller than about 75 gal (there is an infinite debate on the required size of the tank - it should be at least 4' long, 6'+ preferred and have enough water volume and a good enough skimmer than you will be able to keep your nitrates in check. Also consider how many other fish you have or plan to have in the space).
lanman October 16, 2009 October 16, 2009 My yellow tang kicked my purple tang's tail for quite a while. The hippo in my tank is the least aggressive; but he makes up for it with size! Tank size=240. bob
